Larry Niven, an excellent author when he was in his prime.
Poul Anderson would be another choice. That man was one of the golden-age grand-masters.
Alistair Reynolds is one of the best of the new crop that I've seen.

I havent read any Anderson in a LONG time. Good choice there too!!

Ahh, so many books, so little time.....

Asimov
Arthur C. Clarke (Can't believe he wasn't mentioned yet!?)
Gibson ... early stuff at least.
Bradbury (although, I like his short stories better)
Niven

I've read some of the "still alive" guys mentioned, but they just don't stick in my mind the way the masters do.

A lot of very good writers mentioned here.

I have read a huge amount of books, both science fiction and others and of all of them the creatures created by Frank Herbert in "The Jesus Incident" still stick in my mind 20 years after reading it. On this basis alone, I'm gonna have to go with Frank Herbert.

We should set up a "AT book traders" list, just set up a list in your sig or something (maybe a link to a hosted .tiff file?). Books you have for trade and books you might be interested in......anyone want to take the reigns on this?

Vintage - I'd say Asimov, great short stories, awesome Foundation series.

Modern... Tough choice between Orsen Scott Card for me and Neal Stephenson. OSC writes characters really well (ex. Enders Game) and Neal Stephenson can create a interesting Sci-fi world better than any other. Once I finish this Tad Williams Otherland series I might have to add that as well...

Crichton?! 😕
Andromeda Strain, Jurrasic Park, The Projected Man, etc

I still like H.G. Wells (he basically invented Science Fiction)
John W Campbell (master of the Golden Age)
John Wyndham

so many others i like, it would fill a whole web page.
