How about the Pern series by Anne McCaffrey? I liked those books, and with modern CGI they could do a good job with the dragons.

I could see this being a huge hit. Play up the "young teenager bonds with the coolest pet ever" part, then count the money.

I didn't see How to Train Your Dragon, but maybe the concept is a little played? dunno.

Anne McCaffrey has written tons of books that would make great movies, but I don't think Pern would be one of them. I think viewers would shoot down a flick in which 99% of the time people are nice to each other, even with the menace of thread. They'd have to destroy the story to make it 'hollywood'.

The Planet Pirates is one of my favorite sci-fi books written by her, and would make a great film (you should read this if you think yourself a sci-fi fan). The Acorna series, about a little unicorn-like girl found in space, could be a Disney film, and I bet kids and adults would love it.

Ben Bova has written many great sci-fi books, that are perfect for films. Character studies within science fiction settings; get some great actors and these could be a huge hit. Take the Mars books; an American Indian scientist fighting for Mars exploration, while the world tries to shut it down, after they find ruins on Mars.

But, without a doubt in my mind, the sci-fi book that should be made into a movie is Neuromancer.

Dune needs a remake

You didn't get enough shitty remakes of Dune? You need another? At this point, I've lost all hope for a good movie or mini-series version of Dune.

CS Friedman - Coldfire trilogy
Piers Anthony - Battle Circle, post apocalyptic setting, lots of battles, what's not to like?
Piers Anthony - Incarnations of Immortality series. Quarky and totally doable without needing a shit ton of special fx.
Isaac Asimov - Foundation as a mini-series. Flesh out the story to make it flow more naturally. I think it'd be awesome...if they don't screw it up like Dune.
Dean Koontz - Watchers. Can we get a GOOD movie version of this awesome story? I know it's more of a horror genre book but we got genetically modified dogs and monsters on the loose.
