"My God, it's full of stars..."

Most overrated movie ever.

Negative. More like most underrated, unless you're talking about the 2nd movie (quote's not actually in the movie version of 2001, but it is in 2010...go figure), on which I have no comment at this time.

Another personal favorite of mine is Aliens. Better than the 1st, IMO, which is saying a lot.

why is noone saying The Matrix? Were the sequels so bad that they ruined the first one?

(I like to pretend the sequels don't even exist, which helps a lot)

2001: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner, Metropolis, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Clockwork Orange are the ones worth considering. Of those, 2001 is my favorite. The technology in the ending sequence looks really dated now, but the rest of the film is excellent. The HAL character has influenced just about every movie about AIs since then. It also is one of the great movie villans. The film is reference more than any other science fiction film I can think of, though the old B&W films with dumb looking robots are often referenced.

Blade Runner I loved. But it had many flaws as far as writing goes. Much better than the novel, which I really did not like. 2001 the novel was ok, but it's pretty much the same thing as the film.

If you like 2001, try watching the last part (from Jupiter and Beyond) muted, with the song, Echoes, by Pink Floyd. Just start the song when the words "from Jupiter and Beyond" appear on the screen.

wow. I really hated Blade Runner. I love the genre, I love the director, and I loved all the actors that were in it, but I was bored silly by the movie.

I'd have to go with Empire Strikes Back.

Anybody who thinks ESB is better than SW doesn't get a vote.

(Unless you're into plushies - Eewoks - then you're somewhat forgiven...)

Umm Ewoks were in RoTJ not ESB...

Star Wars Episode V--Empire Strikes Back (old school rules!)

Can't stand the new ones---must have consulted with Disney or Sesame Street or something...

Lucas didn't direct ESB or RoTJ. Irvin Kershner directed ESB. Richard Marquand directed RoTJ.

I haven't seen Blade Runner 😱... So in the meantime, I'll have to say, Star Wars (ep 5). It's the very very first Sci Fi movie I saw when I was a wee lass.

Tyrell had told me Rachel was special: no termination date. I didn't know how long we had together, who does?

That version sucked. I preferred the one with no voiceover, by far.
