John Chricton wasn't a captain AFAIK.

No, but he was the nominal leader of the group, and by the time the series ended he was one of the best overall badasses in scifi.

The Lt. Rasczak in the movie "Starship Troopers" was actually an amalgamation of 2 characters from the book. The other character, who actually had all the cool monologues attributed to Rasczak in the movie, was Lt. Colonel Jean V. Dubois. Just thought I'd throw that out there. FWIW I voted for Rasczak.

Thought the original question was for Captain...but obviously a bit more than that now. How about Wedge Antilles in that case? 😛
Rogue Squadron/Wraith Squadron novels...

Is there a specific situation we are looking for here?
Fleet command? Band of rebels on the run command? Goodhearted outlaws on the edge of society getting dragged into a larger conflict command? Badass in a bar fight command? Makes a big difference in who you pick here...

Stanley Tweedle calling out Mantrid to try and stop the universe from being converted to cluster drones took serious stones as well.

That may be the smartest and unique sequence of sci-fi episodes that hardly anybody has seen.

Of course, blowing up a planet just to get into a brothel because he didn't have any cash gets a +1 as well. Kirk just never thought of it 🙂

Lexx was an utterly brilliant show that tried to disguise itself with stupidity.

that show was great for a little while, but towards the end i couldn't handle the stupidity.

Picard is classic, but he never really had to make any real tough calls.

Adama is a badass, but he can be really hard-headed and frustrating too.

The #1 answer is Reynolds from Firefly. Got his people out of shit all the time, kept things going despite the problems, and was funnier than hell doing it, but also willing to make the tough calls when needed.

3 of my favorites were not listed: Jeffrey Sinclair, Jonathon Archer, John Sheppard

My favorite above all of them anyhow: Malcolm Reynolds

i love captain janeway. shes just amazing when it comes to being the captain on voyager. she definitely had the respect of her crew and she had her funny moments as well.

simply awesome.
