Invisible Monsters from the Id - what a concept!

If you haven't seen this one, RENT IT!!!!!!!!!
I own the DVD and watch it about once a month. Great movie.

Another vote for The Fifth Element and 12 Monkeys. Add Blade Runner to the list.

I forgot....Armageddon, great movie.

Yeah, great movie.... FOR ME TO POOP ON!

LMAO! :D

It was better than deep impact so its OK.

Actually, I consider Deep Impact to be better. Armageddon was just plain stupid! Only good part in it was in the beginning when they thought that Finland was attacking USA :D!

<=== A finn

EDIT: Oh, I too forgot Total Recall!

Well, in the face of the Star Wars/Matrix/Aliens exclusions, I am forced to consider the following candidates:
The Terminator
Predator
Robocop

and, I'll take the approach of Olympic figure skating, and give all 3 of those movies the gold ;). I can't really decide which is best between those 3...they all rock.

oh, another sci-fi flick that I like is Stargate.

and I know this isn't really a movie (it was a TV miniseries back in the 80's), but you can get the DVD at Wal-Mart...V (not a whole lot of action I suppose, but I enjoyed it, and the fact that they released a DVD for it says a little something about it's worth, doesn't it?)

I have to disagree 100%. This movie is totally underrated for special effects. Name one movie that has better integrated CGI baddies..they are seamless, it's quite amazing. The cheesy feel is why most north americans hate it, and it is such a massive hit in europe. It's basically a parody of well, america? Guess you could say that.

Did you know that the bugs weren't actually all CGI? They are traditional models that are then CGI enhanced. That's why it looks so much better than any full-CGI scene in recent movies like LOTR.

Trying to think of some that no one has mentioned yet . . .

How about John Carpenter's The Thing? I got it on DVD a while back, and WOW. Great atmosphere, awesome special effects (for 1982), and some good action. The ending is the best part.

Leviathan was pretty good.

Ghosts of Mars wasn't bad (yes, I'm a Carpenter ho.) They Live was great.

I was going to say, how could someone forget Blade Runner. It's an awesome sci fi movie.
But I also really liked Stargate and Pitch Black.

Starship Trooper was fun to watch, but comparing with the Heinlein novel I have to agree: it's BugHunt 90210. I mean, it's too cheesy, the romantic plot is really soapy and the civilian/citizen thing is... lost. The movie was really dumbed down. But I have to agree about the CGI - very nice bugz.
"Do yu want to live forever?"

Also, The Matrix qualifies as action Sci-Fi. I think.

"Do yu want to live forever?"

One of the very few lines they retained from the book.

The cartoon was actually a better adaptation than the movie was.

Definitely the Terminator series is up there. Star Gate, Fifth Element, X-Files (the movie), X-Men (the movie), Independance Day, The Abyss... Oh the list goes on and on.

i was going to say Blade Runner as well. Great movie, although not quite as much action as some of the others mentioned in this thread
