People consider The Beatles the greatest band ever because they crossed the ocean first. Their brand of bubblegum pop (obviously pre-drugs) was popular with teen crowd which made it easier for them to cross the Atlantic and sell records in the US.

IMO they are an average band who was in the right place at the right time. I can listen to The Beatles but I'd have to pick and choose the songs. The majority of their stuff just grates on my ears.

Zep made their name with great music and phenomenal live shows. They didn't release many singles and thus lost out on alot of radio airplay. Even with the lack of radio singles, they could fill up their venues. Their popularity came via word of mouth.

Floyd is kinda hard to categorize. They made drug music that didn't require drugs to understand. Roger Waters was an amazing lyricist and his tension with Gilmour seemed to fuel the band. They were the masters of the concept album.

This may be a poor description but all three bands hit you a different way.
The Beatles music hits me kinda like the Monty Python fish slapping dance. Dance up, smack lightly in the head with a fish and dance back.

Zep walks up and punches you in the gut.

Floyd is like a really cool professor who provokes your thought but you don't realize the complexity of it until you walk out of the class.

Floyd is my all time favorite band but I really think Kashmir is the single greatest rock song of all time. The intro literally sends chills down my spine.

The beatles weren't a rock band just a bunch of drugged up hippies.

Anyway Oasis are the best band in the world mate! 😉

Zep all the way. If you really wanna look at it realisticly, Zep was influenced by old blues players. If Zep wasn't the greatest of bands then why did How the West Was Won debut at number 1 the very day it came out? This after not releasing anything in 21 years (Coda and not the boxed sets or the BBC Sessions) and not any of it was original? More present day bands have cited Zeppelin as a direct influence over the kind of music they play than any other band that ever was.

Now I like all 3 bands, but the Beatles did start the British Invasion here in the states, but that doesn't neceessarily mean that they are the greatest. Floyd has put out some really great tunes (from possilbly drug induced times to sober days) that could tell a story. Zeppelin always fed on their raw energy which was most seen in their concerts. No other band has been able to duplicate the quiet acoustic setting of Earls Court and then turn right around and bust out the jams full tilt all in the same show.

Like was said previously, lack of radio airplay didn't harm Zeppelin one bit. They were enough to be able to both sell lots of albums and sell out their shows.
