Day Four Continues For Man On Tulsa Tower

TULSA, Oklahoma -- The Tulsa Police Department's longest standoff ever continues as a man refuses to come down from the Clear Channel radio tower at 27th and Memorial. The 25-year-old man has been trespassing on the 300-foot tower since about 11 a.m. Thursday.

Police continued to negotiate overnight with the man they identify only as William. They are offering him food, cigarettes and counseling help if he will make his way down.

"I don't listen to that negativity, that flimflam stuff," William could be heard to say as police tried to explain that he is putting himself in danger.

"Dehydration at a cellular level cannot be denied," Senior Negotiator Cole Butler told the News On 6 Saturday.

William managed to sleep on parts of the framework during the day Saturday and overnight Sunday. At one point he lost or kicked off his tennis shoes, so he now is clad only in shorts, a T-shirt and red socks.

He shouted down to police officers repeatedly through the night, telling them he'd rather be on the tower than "down there," and crowing like a rooster as the sun rose.

He denies that he plans to commit suicide.

"There's no such thing as suicide," he said.

Butler agreed that he doesn't believe William is suicidal; however, he noted that could change at any time.

"Honestly, if he was wanting to jump, I think it would have happened by now. But that doesn't mean it won't happen in the next five seconds," the 30-year veteran of the Tulsa Police Department said.

Temperatures are expected to rise to the mid-90s on Sunday.

day 6!

TULSA, Oklahoma -- Tulsa Police have identified the man involved in the department's longest standoff ever, who refuses to come down from the Clear Channel radio tower at 27th and Memorial.

William Sturdivant II, 25, has been trespassing on the 300-foot tower since about 11 a.m. Thursday.

As of Tuesday at 6 a.m. Sturdivant has been on the tower for 116 hours.

At one point Monday, he climbed about half way down the tower, but went no lower. He could also be seen taking brief naps.

The Tulsa Fire Department raised a bucket to Sturdivant Monday morning. He requested a Sprite, Dr Pepper, Rooster Booster and a cappuccino.

Tulsa Police are asking residents to stay away from the scene. They say, in some cases, spectators have hampered efforts to get him to come down.

"We've had a couple of times when we've made some progress with him and then the crowd will start yelling and screaming things, it will distract him, and we'll regress and go 12 hours back in time with the progression that we've made with him," Ryan Perkins, with Tulsa Police, said.

"We don't want people yelling, screaming, taking pictures. We would like people to, basically ignore him," he added.

Spectators who continue to cause problems that obstruct officers abilities are subject to arrest, Perkins said.

He shouted down to police officers repeatedly through the night Saturday, telling them he'd rather be on the tower than "down there," and crowing like a rooster as the sun rose.

One thing's for sure. He's going to have a heck of a sunburn when he finally comes down. How much radiation will he be exposed to in terms of health effects?

I don't understand what the big deal is. Don't talk him down, just have one patrol rotate the watch and when he dies, someone can go up and shake him loose, and pack him away. He comes down, arrest him.

This is a waste of taxpayer money imo. All the media and police presence does is give him the attention he was seeking.

True.

We are 2 hours away in OKC, and it's been on your news every single day as well. If everyone left the guy would probably come down.
