There's something about cat owners that makes them a bit "odd". It seems that most overly-politically-motivated looneys are cat people.

A computer forum filled with the relatively intelligent segment of the population (regardless of how anyone on here views ATOT, it's quite above the level of discourse of most forums out there) is bound to have more cat lovers.

Is that because they're too lazy to let a dog out? Maybe if they got off their computer they'd be able to enjoy a normal life.

I already covered that point, but I still apply it to people besides me. Try again.

Not true. I raised four quails and they'd leave in the afternoon and then come home at night to rest... well, three of them would. The fourth had his legs pecked off by his brothers.

Oh, Yeah!
Ferrets make excellent pets.
My brother had one years ago, he stole everyones hearts.
Never bit anyone or anything.
A lot of fun to play with, quiet but nosy, but not a "cuddling" animal.

But for me, it has to be miniature house dogs.
Currently we have a Teacup Poodle and a Min. Pinscher, a wonderful mixture!

Depends on the person... Go with low maintenence pets if you're lazy or don't have the room/time/patience to deal them... I love ALL animals, and have owned every typical pet, except a ferret... Hmm... Oneday... :)

Turtles are great! We caught some baby map turtles in the river as kids, and they grew up to eat out of our hands, and were fairly low maintenence, as long as you know how to keep an aquarium. However, I don't recommend you take turtles from the wild... Check your local pet shop, or better yet, find a reptile dealer to give you a good recommendation on a turtle that would be right for you.

Goldfish (and many other freshwater fish) are great for the extremely lazy... You'd have to try to kill them....

I LOVE cats and dogs, and might lean slightly as a dog person, but as I've grown lazier as I've aged, (I'm only 33 hehe) I only have cats now. It's nice not having to let them out....

Lizards and snakes are very interesting, but it takes a lot of care to keep them healthy. Temp, humidity.... Too many of these creatures are killed or abandoned by people who had no idea how much upkeep they need.

If you have kids, or are just easily amused, get a gerbil! They are almost ALWAYS friendly, and have personality. We kept them as kids, and I still want to get another. I have friends that swear by pet rats, too.

And, as a goof, if you have a body of water near you, get a small goldfish net, and catch a crayfish! They can live in ANYTHING, and will eat whatever you have to give them. I did this when I lived in the college dorms, and everybody was amazed by how interesting they were. You only need to set up a small tank and give them some water, and some land. They'll spend all day creating houses, and stalking food... And, they're FREE! :) Feeding time is hilarious. I had some brine shimp pellets that they loved, so when it was feeding time, and I dropped the pellets, they'd coming running out, waving their claws in the air like maniacs. :)

I could live without the cat tearing up my stuff though.

Agreed. The question is 'best pet for the average american' and I think cats win as 'best return for time invested' with dogs winning on the best absolute return of love, but take significantly more time and effort to take care of.

I like cats best, though certain dogs I like a lot too.

People who say cats are anti-social or aloof either usually haven't met the right ones or spent enough time around them. Many cats are a little skittish around new people and it can take a bit for them to warm up to you. Once they do, they can be insane little attention whores.

Total BS, my rabbit comes to me and jumps up when I pat the couch. Plus he watches tv with me and follows me around the house. In addition to that he is litter trained so I don't have to walk him every day.

Don't get me wrong, I love dogs and would have one if I could, but I just had to let you know that your statement does not apply to all other pets.
