Best PC speakers wanted, audiophile here, advice?

I agree, I was talking about the Logitech speakers mostly 😛

Wow, the S2-4100s. I remember reading a review about those speakers about 5 years ago. Never had a chance to hear them myself though I did think about picking up a pair once.

No offence to anyone here, but I'm seeing a lot of junk PC systems in this thread.

Take a look at this:

http://www.cambridgesoundworks...dia&item=k1pkm22zz

Your link is to the CSW Megaworks 215's. They look nice but the satellites have a fairly large footprint. For a few more bucks ($400) you can get the CSW MegaWorks 213's. Here is the link: http://tinyurl.com/5ahsu. The subwoofer is the same as the CSW 215's but the satellites are the taller, narrower and more expensive Newton Series MC300.

The Swan M200's look good but take up way too much desk space, especially if you keep them away from the rear walls (see my post elsewhere in this thread).

Anyway, I'm still looking for reviews, opinions on the CSW Megaworks 215s.

i can vouch for the swans. i have their top of the line and am empressed everday. I would recomend looking for used gear in the budget your are talking. There are many high quality items to be found on audiogon. Check out nad for 2 channel reciever...this is persona opinion...as you know...audio has much to do with personal taste...get something that sounds good to you and that is built of high quality

if i understand the op post correctly, he needs the speaker to listen music right ? But what kind ? Some people told me for audio that emphasize vocal sound more than instrument (ie. not linkin park, heavy metal, or rap), it's better to have a non subwoofer setup, just a 3 way bookshelf speaker.

maybe you guys have opinion about this ?

thanks for the various suggestions. the key here is simple set up, very very good speakers. the idea of getting a receiver (?!) confused me. being an audiophile with a separate system, i'm looking for a plug-in and have very good sound situation here. you know, plug into the sound card, plug the speakers into the power outlet, and have a surprisingly good quality of sound.

i frankly never looked into very good computer sound as most audiophiles scoff at good computer sound. but recently with internet radio, i'm really enjoying the variety of international radio music i get to hear. what a wide array of choices from all over the world!

that's why i'm looking for a very good set of speakers. even though so many are more than 2 speakers plus a sub (most are like 4 or more speakers plus a sub), i really don't see myself seriously watching a movie on my computer since i have a completely separate audio/visual system.

with all that as a "follow up comment", any kind folks out there with additional suggestions? many thanks again!

let me say this again.. a guy at head-fi forums has a used s2-4100 for $120. this is not only an oustanding deal, these units are out of production and thus are considered a rarity... i would have picked them up if i didnt already have one. not really the best speakers in the world, but 'good enough' and excellent for the price you pay for it.

You said you're an audiophile right?

I'd really recommend building your own system. Buy your drivers seperately, and build some cabinets for them. I am of the belief that you cannot get a turnkey system that will compare to a system you have pieced together with drivers recommended by people that know a LOT about home audio stuff.

If you DO go this route, I would also look into another forum that is populated with people that listen to a LOT of components and could tell you the good and bad of what they have heard (much like the people that know everything about cooling or mobos here).

btw - What components are in your "main" A/V system?

later,
nate

I'm not an audiophile (but do like good sound systems taking into account "bang for the buck") but what you are looking for is what I was looking for - something that does a very good job on music played directly from my computer while I'm doing computer work or just plain surfing. I don't have room for a receiver and bookshelf type speakers in my office (and the Swan's, good as they are reviewed, would have overwhelmed my desktop).

I'll have to seriosly check out internet radio some time. Post your favorite links if you have time.

Anyway, it would seem that there would be a decent size market for very good computer music speakers (2.1 or 2.0) in the $250 to $500 price range. I was amazed to see the choice limited to the Swan M200's (and I couldn't find the where the better/other Swan multimedia were actually sold) and the better CSW models along with the Klipsh Promedia 2.1. I have a $1500 (decent, obviously not audiophile) 2.1 stereo system in my living room that I don't have time to listen to all that often. But I am in front of this machine a lot. This is where I listen to most of my music and I can't imagine being one of only a few who fits this profile.

that's why i'm looking for a very good set of speakers. even though so many are more than 2 speakers plus a sub (most are like 4 or more speakers plus a sub), i really don't see myself seriously watching a movie on my computer since i have a completely separate audio/visual system.

A lot of us don't play action games and watch movies elsewhere - another reason there should be more decent 2.1 or 2.0 music speaker choices. Because of space considerations, I just ordered the CSW 213s for $400. Although I couldn't find any independent reviews on this 2.1 set itself, other models using the same sub reviewed fairly well and the included satellites (CSW Newton Series MC3000's) do review well, even at some audiophile sites. The MC300's are tall and narrow, so they fit in well next to my duel monitors in a corner setup (as opposed to the Swan's).

with all that as a "follow up comment", any kind folks out there with additional suggestions?

If you are interested in some information on better ways of making MP3s or more advanced lossless compression check out the following site:

I'm just getting started here but the above site links to other sites which appear to have the right information.

i'm running out now so i cannot write a longer reply, but want to thank you guys for your comments. i wonder why we cannot email each other directly for those of us who would like to. For example, i'm pretty close to ordering a CSW (but a different model) and would like to email RIRick directly, but somehow, on this site/forum, there is no ability to do so. Am i missing something? that will allow those of use to have private conversations that are more directly related to what we're doing, i.e. why RIRick ordered his model and why i might order a different one. please tell me whether i may email directly or not. thx! rushing out the door now, be back later...

Build some monitor speakers with the adire audio 5" midwoofer and 1" tweeter kit they have and get a koda 8" and put in a box with a plate amp.

People have the option of listing their email in their profile. If they do not have their profile visible or it is and they don't disply their email you can still send them a pm (private messge) through the site (though people can also turn that off). Hope this helps.

after a number of years in the audiophile world as an enthusiast, i've personally, i stress personally, have come to the conclusion that i cannot build speakers at the quality level that one can buy them at in today's world.

the amount of testing (witness the Canadians' government sponsored labs), the knowledge from trial and error vis-a-vis resonances, etc. just cannot easily be done by the "home enthusiast". i'm not saying that no one can do it, just that for me, i cannot forsee that i can easily do that.

as a result, building my own speakers is out of the question if i were to be interested in accuracy. if my goal were to build for the excitement and interest in the process, rather than the result, then yes, maybe i'd try it.

i hope i was able to express my point of view without being rude to those who were kind enough to post their "build your own" ideas.

It should be illegal for a sound system to kick as much ass as that one would.

so far, for some reason, my top pick is the cambridge 215 for $320. my hesitation are two fold: the two speakers are not originally made for computer use (no big deal), and if you backed out the prices, the subwoofer is much less expensive if you were to purchase their 213 system (which in my opinion, is likely going to have inferior midrange sound, just a guess, since i've never seen them). you can back out the price of the subwoofer by finding out how much each pair of the speakers cost separately.

215 is $320, but the 2 speakers without sub are $184, so that leaves around $135 for the sub.
213 is $400, and the 2 speakers without sub are $320, so that leaves around $80 for the SAME sub.

the dual midrange of the 213 are likely ineffective and superfluous for computer/close range use. that configuration is called the D'Appolito configuration, most often used for wider dispersion purposes. the extra cost of the 213 is due partially to the extra cost of the driver, extra cost of assembly, and their ability to "mark it up" because of the dual midrange (customers will tolerate a higher price just because they see 2 midrange drivers). the extra cost has little to do with practical pluses or minuses. Having said that, the 215's should really be around $265 because the sub (same sub for both) is only priced at $80 when purchased w/the 213. Unfortunately, the sub is NOT available for purchase separately. Really odd marketing by this company, most likely because they are no longer owned by an individual (formerly Henry Kloss), but now, owned by a much larger company: Creative. It's likely that the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing and they are having these "conflicting pricing" situations.

then again, having said all that, the difference between $265 and $320 isn't the end of the world either. $320 is still within range for what this combo is worth. having not listened to it yet, it's hard for me to opine. i'm tempted to try it out. i've always thought of that company's products to be medicocre but value oriented and decent. in this case, you can't really choose regular speakers as you need a sub with three power amps in it (for the sub, for the left and right speakers), connections that go from the sound card (via mini plug) to the sub, then connections to go from the sub to the speakers. so that really entails a specially designed sub for this very purpose. that leaves out almost all of the standard, fancier, higher fidelity speakers.

any comments, gents?

does Anandtech forums not have a "notification by email" feature? You know, if someone responds to a thread, you get an email right away so you can check it?

I concur with virtualgames0.

Except I got the 10" dayton sub from partsexpress.com for 114 shipped. It's the non-kit one. (List price on partsexpress claims 220 dollars).

And of course, Swans M200.

I am extremely happy with my purchase, best 300 bucks I ever spent 😛. I can't really say anything about the Yamaha, but I'm sure that is excellent as well. Japanese companies make good quality items, for the most part.

The first header block at the top of the thread has an icon that looks like two envelopes with a gold bar on the edge with a red arrow over the top - that is the "subscribe to thread" icon (you will get email on thread activity). The "Lock" icon at the top of each post is the Private Mail icon, the magnifying glass is the Profile icon thru which you can email the person directly (if the person allows public access to their email address).
. I think Altec's current equivalent to the discontinued ATP-3 (the 4151, I think) is quite musical and natural sounding - but doesn't have much really deep bass (below about 50Hz). Costs $70. + sh on newegg.
. I'm an audiophile from way back so I also know what does a good job of sound reproduction and what doesn't. A friend (BT are his initials) of mine helped design and produce the Eminent Technology air-bearing turntable... He had a bleeding edge system (custom electrostatic speakers, etc.) which I got to listen through quite often. And I also went to numerous live performances of both classical and pop (electronic) music for setting the baseline for comparison.

.bh.

I did a lot of researching and reading and listening and don't have a lot of space but am an audiophile and have an excellent stereo system that I upgrade from a pro shop buying audiophile tradeins as my budget and my common sense tells me to wait for the proper time and the owner of the audiophile store knows me well as I trade there often.
I just purchased the Altec Lansing MX 5021 THX and use them on my Toshiba Laptop and they are G R R EAT!!!
The part that I like as a bonus is that being that they are an amplified speaker I also use them on my TV through the earphone jack or a Y splitter on the back of the TV and I get excellent sound for the size of TV that I have since I don't have a surround system on it. The base and treble adjustment is good and the sound does not bug my neighbors. The movies sound great. Take a listen and make up your mind!!! Happy listening and shopping!!! Cheers And of course you would know that I disconnect them from the box when I want to hook them up to the TV.

Well it's not exactly audiophile, but it will give you surround sound without the mess of clutter... try the Zalman 5.1 headphones if you're considering good headphones for not too high a price.
