Best PC speakers wanted, audiophile here, advice?

Hi! I'm a longtime audiophile and while my PC and my stereo is in the same room, I'd like to listen to a number of foreign radio stations via WinMedia10. I like the ease with which to find stations from all over, while I'm on my PC.

I've never had great PC speakers since most audiophile consider anything but their "main" system to be not good enough ;) Yet, i'm at the point now that i'd like pretty good sound sitting here, even though my stereo is maybe 20 feet away. By the way, there's no way I can be sitting at my main stereo's sweetspot while on my desktop PC.

People have mentioned that the Logitec top of the line for around $399 is good (it has that controller). I'm wondering if the good folks here have advice for some truly excellent speakers for my PC. What I'm looking for is ease of connection (standard PC audio card plugs), good quality control (don't need more things to break, too much hassle), excellent sound.

What I don't need, though I understand that these things come in a "package" nowadays, is a large number of speakers for multi-channel effects. I do not (yet) game. I don't watch movies on my PC (my audio system has finally gone multichannel and is well integrated w/my tv). It is sort of a hassle for me to have so many little speakers on my desk, taking up space, and those speakers being improperly placed (only the front two are properly placed for stereo effect, the other side/rear speakers have no place to go but on my desktop due to the way my desk is situated), those other speakers aren't of much use. I do understand that it's sort of the current thing that they sell these "PC speaker 'systems' out of one box" so that you open up one big box, and it contains like 5-7 speakers incl the subwoofer, so it may not be a choice to want to buy fewer speakers, they simply might come as a "system" and i'll have to make do with so many small speakers sitting on my desk.

Looking forward to your advice. Thanks in advance.

It sounds like 2.1 setup would be best for you. You can go by best buy and listen to the klipsh promedia 2.1 and see how you like that ~160.00. The logitech z2200 would be another to look at ~130.00. I listened to both of those fine systems and decided on the cyber tech 3780. Read the reviews on newegg and go listen to them and decide. Oh you can get the cybers at radio shack for 79 bucks and free shipping. You will not be disappointed in the quality and sound. You can see the klipsh at newegg also though they do not carry the logitech z2200.

Sauro, I just got these speakers (Cybertech) after listening to klipsh promedia 2.1 and logitech Z2200. These are very high quality heavy speakers with pure undistorted sound, phenominal response and they rival the klipsh and definately sound better than the logitech. The sound is purely fantastic. Wiring is high quality too. I guarantee you will love these and the price is fantastic. Newegg has em for ~105 shipping included but Radio Shack has them for 79 bucks and free shipping! That's where I got mine ordering online. Read the reviews on newegg, all 5 star and not 1 negative review. I would recommend getting nice speakers then a sound card later on. I had altecs prior also. You will not be disappointed. A sound card is not going to benefit you at this time.

the point is that the way my desk is set up, i cannot have speakers around me/to my side/back of me. i'm not looking for surround sound!! as i mentioned, i don't want surround sound, but it seems like that's all they are selling nowadays.

I recommend the Klipsch Promedia 2.1s. Though I would look pretty hard at the Swans if I was buying again., I have heard a number of good things about them. I am very happy with my ProMedia 2.1s. Most of what I have heard bout the GMX series is that the ProMedia are quite abit better.

I don't know that I would call myself an audiophile, though others might call me that. I can say that over the last 8 years or so since I got hooked I have spent lots of time on my main stereo. And sometimes I think way too much money, lol (when my girlfriend pointed out I could have gotten her one of the new VW bugs she wants with the money I have put into it I figured I should probably stop dumping so much money into it, lol).

there was a guy selling his diamond HPM S2-4100s at head-fi. these things are quite rare, and as a proud owner i must tell you they are quite nice. probably somewhat worse than swan M200s but you get better bass extension with 8'' sub.
http://www6.head-fi.org/forums...?p=1032647#post1032647 <-- you might wanna ask this guy how they compare. both are miles ahead of klipsch offering for music.

Without a doubt, you owe it to yourself to hear the Klipsch GMX 2.1 systems before making a choice. And think about computer speakers made by a long time premium audio manufacturer like Klipsch, or speakers made by a company with no high end audio experience.

I am receiving my Swans M200's today, and I also ordered a 10" Dayton sub.

The Swans M200s are from Newegg.com for 187 shipped.

The Dayton 10" Sub is from partsexpress: Dayton Sub
This sub was 114 shipped. They claim it's 220 retail and they normally sell it for ~125, but it was going for 99 dollars.

I'm just kind of getting into the whole audiophile scene, so I'm somewhat of a newb, but all the responses I've received about my choices have been pretty good. :)

For their high quality and very reasonable price, my vote for "The Best" 2.1 speakers goes to...
The EV SonicXS
I found mine, New In Box at a very popular auction site for under $60 shipped!

my rig
senn hd-650 + silver dragon replacement cable
singlepower ppx3-6cg7 (RCA cleartops x3)
headphile silver RCA - mono interconnect
EMU 1212M heavily modded with blackgate caps

True, I should have offered it more as a suggestion.."have you considered headphones instead?"

Go to Best Buy and listen to the speakers they have set out. I listened to the Klispch Promedia 2.1s and MAN do they sound crisp and clean. Even compared to the Logitech Z-5300 THX 5.1s, the Klipsch 2.1s sound so much cleaner on the high notes. I know, in all the threads you hear praise about the Klipsch, but go listen for yourself and youll see. But in the end it all boils down to what you prefer... Side note: Anyone know of a retail store that has the Logitech Z-5500s out for display so you can listen to them??

same thing would happen if you hear something better than klipsch, diamond s2-4100 and swan M200 for instance.

There is a big thread about them in the hotdeals forum somewhere, although most of it is arguing.

I'm a first time poster here who started a thread on essentially this topic on the "Other Other Topics" forum of the giant poker strategy website www.twoplustwo.com Here is a link to the thread: http://tinyurl.com/3mk85

Anyway, from reading the older thread on this forum regarding the Swan hotdeal it is nice to know you guys can argue as much as us poker players but our thread also led to the Swan M200's.

One concern for me is that the Swan M200's are bass reflex and according to the following review must be placed about six inches from the rear wall: http://tinyurl.com/6lv4s This is a problem on the right side of my duel monitor setup where it will be hard to get more than about three inches of clearance. Do any of you think this would be a problem?

In the linked thread above from the poker sub-forum I was also looking at the Cambridge SoundWorks MegaWorks 213 Amplified system. This is now $400 but I can hardly find a review or an opinion other than the one posted on CSW. Here is a link: http://tinyurl.com/5ahsu My sense is that the CSW 213s are a bit of a kludge pieced together from other components designed for conventional hifi but I'm not expert in this area.

Looking at the Swan website there appears to be other 2.1 and 2.0 multimedia options (my budget is up to $400). Unfortunately, I was unable to find any information regarding their other speakers (reviews or where to buy). Here is the link: http://www.swanspeaker.com/mul/index.asp

Hope this helps and am looking for some feedback regarding my own concerns.

Regards,

Rick

I'm using Klipsch Promedia 2.1's right now. past sets include Altec Lansing ATP3, Logitech z-560, Logitech z-680. The Klipsch's blow everything else away in terms of quality. Plus, my Sony MDR-V6 headphones sounds about 10x better hooked into the Klipsch's than they did with the other 3 sets.

Are the clearance EV's the SonicXS or the SonicXJR 2.1 speakers?

Again, if you don't mind not having surround sound while watching a movie or playing a game, I can honestly vouch for the Swans M200 and the 10" Dayton sub I referred to in my previous post. I am not a true audiophile, and I don't even have near the amount of money to be like that, but I really do enjoy my music, and the swans + the sub has brought clear, newfound pleasure from my movies, my anime, my music and.. everything!

The swans alone were very nice, but mixed in with the dayton subwoofer it absolutely kills the few 5.1 systems I've heard. (I've only heard the 5.1 speakers my friends use, any they spent 100-200 dollars max)
