best pc shooter?

Eh, I really enjoyed Crysis but fun factor wise I couldn't rank it in the top of all shooters. Far Cry was better I think. HL2 + progeny were fantastic, if linear. Stalker was atmospheric and addictive if you could get past the threshold 7-hrs.

For pure fun? Honestly I think I had a better time working my way through Portal than most of the games in the poll. Though I suppose that's more FPP than FPS. Oh well.

I love COD4. I honestly I haven't had this much fun with a PC game in a very long time. Furthermore, my vote for COD4 was also a vote for the whole COD series - I've been playing online since the very first installment.

If it could be an RPG set in first person, then STALKER and Deus Ex are much better than anything else.

If it has to be an actual shooter, than Serious Sam 1st and 2nd encounter are the kings.
Hundreds of enemies at one time, massive weapons to mow them down. Nothing else comes close, with the possible exception of Serious Sam 2 (which I didnt like much).

EDIT:
If it has to be a game with some depth, then I pick Dark Forces.

WTF where is Doom?

Why would have have Quake 1 2 3 4, but only Doom 3? Doom >> Doom 3

Well, anyway, besides Doom, Bioshock wins (best FPS story of all time, it's a great shooter overall but story is the most important factor in my mind)

poll is invalidated by so many people liking COD4... the sounds in the game are awful. why does my assault rifle sound like a pea shooter?

I play COD4 a lot. But not even close to as much as TF2. It's just so much more fun and it's easy to find yourself passing 5-6 hours playing it without even noticing.

I don't see how this thread is even really answerable. Just because you get a gun, and have a first person perspective doesn't mean the games are comparable.

cod4 - can you compare this SP to something like Bioshock? Or HL2? etc. Yes, the MP is a bash for Xbox Live fans and some PC gamers but does that mean you can rate it in the same vein as some of the others.
crysis - pretty typical FPS leaning toward the cutting edge of graphics - this I feel could be comfortably compared to FC in style so I can at least see that
bioshock - single player atmosphere RPG/FPS hybrid .. in no way comparable to something like cod4
hl2, ep. 2, CS - Can't even really compare HL2 (heavily story driven action FPS) to CS (team shoot 'em up)

I could continue on down the this but I think I've made my point. I could list reasons why I really enjoyed each one of these games minus CoD4 which I just don't care for but to be able to truly compare one to the other? Can't do it fairly.

COD4 had an amazing single player campaign albiet short, and the multi was fun too

But I had to vote TF2, cause I play it way way way more than I play anything else.

In the past, I enjoyed CS a lot and BF2 immensly.

I like BF2 and special forces for the vehicles and map size (large yet confined).

COD4 is good, but the maps are too small for the number of folks playing.
