If I had to actually buy these cars for price/performance, I'd get an Evo. Nothing like using a 4 cylinder rice rocket to feed crow to snobbier cars. :D

wheres the E39?!?!?! its definitely best overall. perfect balance of room, comfort, quality, handling, and power.

(if it was anything other than the E39 NFS4 would be bitch about how it hasn't been updated since 1997)

For a daily driver with the perfect balance of performance, luxury, and versatility, the 4MOTION VW Golf R32 can't be beat.

Oh yes.

Oh wow, a poser AWD car (FWD unless there is wheel slippage). Bleh!

I expect more than that from you. Tell me, other than off-roading, when do you need all 4 wheels driven ALL of the time?

Most people here seem to be picking "Best Race Car under 50K", and not the best overall car. Tell me, are you going to pick up that new TV you just bought in the Z06 or the 350Z?

If you're gonna do AWD in a "performance" car, do it right (Quattro, Subaru's full-time FWD, etc.). As for picking up a TV, that's why most families have TWO vehicle: a car + an SUV/pickup :)

Another weak arguement.

The R32 holds it's own with the Evo and STi in the slalom and on the skidpad... on inferior stock tires, and this is with their "inferior" AWD system. Have you ever heard the old saying: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it?"

The fact that a family has two cars and that the other can be used for hauling is irrelevant. If it WAS actually relevant, the question would have been: "If interior quality and versatility of interior space isn't a concern, which car under 50K would you choose?"

Going by the original criteria, I stand by my choice.

I'd say its pretty Damn close, but i like the Vette the best, then the G35, 350Z, and M3 in that order ... but they are all close, and great cars ..

The problem with FWD-until-slip AWD systems is their latency. It doesn't matter if you go off-roading (in which case you wouldn't want AWD anyway...you'd want a full 4WD system with locking diffs). There's still a delay, where the system decides that you are slipping and then sends power to the rear wheels, in this time..you could already be off the road and hugging that guardrail.

Same process applies when you hitting that apex and the front wheel slips, and its doesn't send power fast enough to the rear wheels for you to power out of the turn; while cars such as the EVO and STi can (and you can see this if you ever watch auto-x videos of them). I have personally seen a STi on stock tires go around a auto-x and it was simply a BEAST. It just gripped, gripped, and still continued gripping. And this was a tight course too, which is not really suited to cars as big as the STi.

btw, this isn't to say the R32 is a bad car; it isn't..its a pretty good car with an excellent combination of performance/luxury. However I think it is a little overpriced, but you could argue it's excellent interior justifies the price (which is true...depending on what you want from the car). The only thing that stops me from buying a R32 (or any VWs for that matter) is its reliablity and horrible dealer service. I browse the Vortex.com daily (as much as I browse here), and there are enough ppl who got rid of their GTis or Jettas due to shoddy reliability.

To the other poster, the E39 is the chassis code for the current BMW 5-Series.

SLK320? A porky 2-seater that can't even compete with a Z4 or Boxster? Yeah right. NEXT! LOL, when that car first came out, you could only get it with an auto and a 4-banger:p

You haven't seen the new AMG SLK320 have you? Supercharged 6-cyl with 340 hp..upgraded suspension..and all the works.

BMW 5 series.

I can load up a 530i for just under 50 grand MSRP. That would be my choice, were it on your list...

And why is the A6 and A4 not on the list?
