Hey Guys,
I am 19 and like around 250 pounds now, very very bad ! i am about 5'4 as well.
I used to weigh under 220 before, until i started working, eating out like every da$% day. I used to go to the gym at school everyday for about a hour, which i actually got stronger, and faster, but that was more than a year ago. I am looking to go to a gym, because i dont have any motivation at home to do anything at home.

What do you guys think is the cheapest non-contract fitness membership available ?
including start up fees (useless..all commission probably)

I need to start working out, lose a ton of weight, and get stronger. Plus stay active
in the gym as well, any help will be great !

Thanks !

Diet is the first thing for you to worry about. Gym is a distant second; it helps maintain your strength, but isn't much help as far as losing weight. That said, the only non-contract places around here seem to be the local (that is, non-chain) gyms. Make sure that your gym of choice has an extensive free weight selection and a squat rack, and if possible an olympic platform.

I dont eat much...i never ate much out, i dont eat fried foods, they make me sick. I dont like beef much compared to chicken. I try to
eat salads whenever i can.

Not to sound like a jerk, but you don't get to be and stay at 250, 5'4" without eating too much or without a serious pituitary/thyroid problem. You need to start keeping your diet in check, bud.

I went to one of many fitness facilities run by the county...they had just added a new wing with brand new machines.
$50 /month if you signed up for 4 months, cheaper if annual.
Without any contract it ran something like $65/month, $6.xx/day.
I liked it a lot because it was usually empty during the day. Also had a big ass swimming pool but I'm no swimmer.
No startup fees and they offered student discounts.

Truth.

I was about 250lbs (I am 5' 9") in January of '08. I thought by diet wasn't that bad and even tried to tell my doctor it wasn't that bad. I was lying to myself. I have lost about 40lbs over the last year from nothing more than changing my diet.

I think that's an ill-informed and overall poor choice. You will, in effect, just be doing another fad diet, starving yourself. You don't have to starve yourself at all. How about you read the fat loss sticky and then follow that.

The 24 hour fitness around here doesn't have contracts. Golds and Ballys does. Never been to the LA Fitness. Other than that, look at local gyms.

Plus isn't Bally's going bankrupt again or somethin'? :X

I wouldn't recommend it.

Losing weight isn't complicated. It doesn't involve fad diets. Here's the secret:

Calories in < Calories out.

That's it! I swear. Determine your baseline calorie needs (ie how many calories do you need to consume in a day to neither gain nor lose weight) and work from there.

Websites such as Fitday can help tremendously with figuring out what you're eating and how it it is affecting you.

Gyms are great, and I'd encourage you to join one, but get your diet under control first.

Are they? I only did a week trial at one last year, was not a fan...seems more geared towards 40 year old women than me.

I did the same thing and had the same experience. I hated that place.

The fun thing is this: you can even eat exactly the same foods you've been eating all along. You just need to eat less. Count calories, you'll be surprised.

DON'T GO TO BALLY'S. I had a membership there and they were horrible when I tried to cancel.

I like Lifetime Fitness. They are all across the country and have no cancellation fee and it is a month to month contract.
