I will get shredded for this, but I still prefer plain old Outlook Express. I have tried Forte Agent and others and just found them cumbersome. If you need to download yEnc-encoded files, you can use a little proxy translator like yProxy.

Agent easy to use? Bah! And feh! And the 2GB limit! Evil! Pure evil! And it is a royal pain to set up.
PAN
Install GTK, install PAN, get on with downloads.

Forte is great for discussion groups, but it absolutely blows compared to a dedicated binary newsreader for the binaries groups. You really should give some of the other programs in this thread a try.

I'm using an older version of Giganews Binary Newsreader. I have all the other programs I just like this one. Biggest problem I've found with all the programs I've tried is that they all have issues downloading really large groups. Even using a database they all take huge amounts of ram trying to get the headers for groups that have 1,000,000+ articles. If there's a program that does this well, I'd like to try it.
