News Bin or News Reactor.

I had to switch from agent because it has a limit of 1 million topic. On giganews, some of the popular groups can have 1.7 million topics, so I wasn't able to download them with Agent. Now that I'm using News bin, I find it's a MUCH better program.

Best interface

Excellent layout

Easy as pie to use.

Forte is great for discussion groups, but it absolutely blows compared to a dedicated binary newsreader for the binaries groups. You really should give some of the other programs in this thread a try.

I have. I've tried every single one of the others listed and always come back to forte agent because its the bomb. GREAT at binary files. I don't see the problem that others are having...

I've used Agent (www.forteinc.com) for years ane years and I love it. If a file is in 37 parts it just shows it to you one time and that the files are */37. Also tells you if any parts are missing and such.

Biggest problem I've found with all the programs I've tried is that they all have issues downloading really large groups. Even using a database they all take huge amounts of ram trying to get the headers for groups that have 1,000,000+ articles. If there's a program that does this well, I'd like to try it.

The newest releases of Newsbin have had really good ram usage. Ram usage was cut by about 1/3

newsbin pro and newspro. Both have their strengths.

Newsbin is a lot more intuitive although I believe newspro has some nice features such as setting an alternate news server to choose articles by ID rather than searching through headers. This can help tremendously when looking for missing parts. It's also got better sorting and seems to be more stable overall. I've also found that Newsbin needs 1GB of Ram to deal with the larger groups, although apparently that has been fixed in the newer version. I recommend them both if that is an option.

Haven't used Agent in quite a while so perhaps things have changed. I always found Agent less than desirable for huge binaries. It's sorting and automation features never could compare to some of the other programs listed here. It's great for reading text groups, though.

Being able to search on the server rather than download headers is probably my favorite feature in NewsPro. I'd imagine some other programs can do this as well. Instead of downloading all the headers, I just send a couple search strings up and select all the groups to include. I get back 1 list of all the matches from each group combined.

No, we must just have strange brains. It was the only program worth a damn for binaries until around 6 months ago (or so) when PAN got a stable release out. But even way back then it was a PITA.

OTOH, Newspro actually looks pretty cool.

Edit: just checked out Free Agent 2...still: yecch.

Grabit. It's the only one that makes newsgroups truly easy to figure out. Even my dad uses it.

Pretty cool that the program itself is less than a meg. The guy that develops NewsPro is a heck of a programmer. There's so much in that program. If you need anything, just let the guy know. He updates it all the time.
