I used newsfeeds for ~3 months. Never had one problem with them. They where the best price/download I could find. 10gb a day for $20 a month. You will quickly go through the 6gb a month if you want DVD-Rips.

The reason I stopped using newsgroups is it started cutting off my internet. I get cable through charter.net and it would drop the whole internet down in ~5mins' of downloading. I tried different newsgroup readers and switched back and forth through newsfeeds' server and charter's server with the same result.

The only thing I could come up with is charter.net itself was cutting off my internet because of what I was downloading :D or that I was download so fast (350mb/s) or for so long (>2 days at a time sometimes @ 300-350kb/s). Any ideas?

Also, what does everyone use for a newsreader? I used Grab-it but would like to see if there is anything better.

I use UsenetServer. $14.95/month for unlimited downloads. I see between 1.8 and 20Mb/s depending on the number of connections utilized and my available network bandwidth.

In the past month I've downloaded 170GB through them, so something like easynews just can't compete.

Tried Easynews, Supernews and Giganews. For me Giganews has the fastest speeds. Also, they recently stopped counting headers in their downloads.

Some of the binaries newsgroups can take quite a while to just download the headers so this was a big selling point.

hi,
really depends what you need it for. If you only need it for "pictures" and dont need upload capabilities then www.pictureview.com is very good, there's also www.usenetix.com which MIGHT be even better because it allows categories etc.

These two services have the big advantage that you get thumbnails and you dont have to download everything first to see what's on. (Like wit a newsreader you run at home which connects you via NNTP to some server)

Both services are about $9/month with unlimited download. (AFAIK !) (General warning applies for "adult-content" :)

If you want a general newsserver then giganews is the one i always hear about. (Dont use it tho)

HOWEVER - dont you have a usenet/newsgroup server already with your ISP ????? Every decent ISP also has newsgroup access !! Otherwise..change provider....

you asked for the best newsgroup to sign up for

oh, and rec.humor is awesome

no, he asked for a news 'service'/server, not a newsgroup :) And...why is it called 'free'....like the other groups are NOT ? :)

i cannot believe there are people which pay $15 or more a month just for USENET/newsgroups.......sorry thats crazy....

What speeds do you get from them? On charter.net news server I only get 15-30kb/s.

I have been using Easynews for a couple years and I like it. I am only paying $10.00 a month for it and I like the option of not having to wait out the 30 days if you exceed your limit in a particular month.

I use my roadrunner server.
Retention kinda blows but at 350K/sec and free I can keep up.

I've been using NewsFeeds for about a year. Great service and fast. No problem downloading at 380K to max out my line. Their completion and retention is good.

If you use NewsFeeds, I suggest you use NewsPro or something similar. Those program will manage all the servers and the daily download limit on each. NF gives you 750meg/day on most of the servers. A good newsgroup reader will combine all the servers and messages and so forth. www.usenetopia.com is the best reader I've ever used. If you download from usenetopia, get the full version, not the free version. It comes with a 30day trial. Awesome program.

It's rare that I hit my limit on enough servers to not grab something. I've grabbed 4 or 5 CDs worth of stuff in a day without hitting my limit on all the servers.

I'm thinking of dropping Giganews this month to try a service with a high DL limit. It's either going to be Astraweb or Newsfeeds. I guess I could try usenetserver again but it was down so often the last time I tried them.

UsenetServer has had some rocky time in the past, however it all seems to be worked out now.

Retention is up to ~7-9 days in the big groups, speeds are fantastic and I haven't had it spit out any kind of errors in the last 4 weeks.

Current months download is ~190GB, doing anywhere between 0-45GB/night, so I think I've been stressing the service :)

Does usenetserver offer unlimited downloads?

8 to 9 days. It is very rare that parts are missing. Right now, I am using EasyNews as a backup solution for missing files but hardly ever use it so I might cancel my EasyNews account soon.

I actually use Astraweb's pay-per-byte system. I find it to be cheaper and more efficient in the end since I can pull the full download speed my internet connection can handle and also use Newbin NZB files so I don't need to constantly download headers. 65GB for $25 is friggin perfect for me. I get ~500KB/s consistently.

I used to use Newsbin... have switched to Newsleecher. Didn't like Newspro or Xnews for my purposes.
