Best Movies to watch on Blu-Ray

So I quit Prime and jumped on the Netflix one DVD at a time plan to start watching Blu-Ray discs now that I have an XBox Series X and a decent tv. It's not a home movie theater setup by any means, but a nicer TCL 65' and a pretty decent 3.1 system in a smaller space, so it sounds good. I enjoy watching movies there with the magnificent subwoofer that is the SVS SB1000Pro.

I put 1917 on the queue already. What other Blu Ray versions of movies will really shine, but that are still good movies? Like I could not watch a Fast and Furious, it's just too stupid to me. All streaming services compress their stuff a decent amount, so I want to treasure a few movies a month in their full glory.

TIL Netflix still sends out disks.

Jack Reacher looks great on 4k disk. And the Atmos track sounds great if you have the right audio setup. All the Lord of the Rings movies look good too.

Tron Legacy is one of my go to discs. We are actually about to cancel our 1 disk Netflix plan RIP. Your sub should do that some justice. If I recall correctly it also has a 7.1 mix, which you don't have but it's still cool to hear. Not many have that option. I also show off with Sunshine. I am also unabashed in my support of Pacific Rim as well.

What is your setup besides that sub/tv?

That is such a broad question.

Watch what movies you love/like.

You like Marvel movies? They would work fine.

Like Sci-fi movies? Try Aliens. Old school? Forbidden Planet looks awesome on BR.

Like Classic movies? Casablanca, etc

Like Westerns? The Good The Bad and The Ugly is great on BR.

I'd probably work this in reverse, figure out what movies you want to watch, and if you're more concerned with whether it's a good transfer, check to see the reviews.

Anything but horror. If it's older it needs to have been transferred well technically I guess.

I'll probably watch one of the Thor movies. I'm kinda over marvel, but the one Taiki Waititi directed would be fun to see again. I'll rewatch a few marvel movies.

Don't know about the sound quality since I can't use my HT these days (new neighbor).

Avatar
Alita Battle Angel
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets
Godzilla (2014)

I think you get a much bigger jump in audio quality using a bluray vs. streaming than you do in video quality. I'm more of a sound snob though so I can't really comment on video quality of bluray vs. streaming.

I still stream movies but if it's anything where I care about sound, I wait until I can grab it from Redbox.

Well fuck me. I guess I'm cancelling. I just figured why would they not offer 4k Blu rays.
When I first got a 4K drive, the only place I could find to rent UHD Blu-Rays was Family Video. This was in the Midwest, of course, being where you are there could be a better chance of a local place offering them, but that still carries the whole pick up & return hassle.
