Well mine is a Specialized Rockhopper that was around $600. I did a lot of research but I'm no expert. Think most would suggest going and talking to someone at a local bike shop.

The RockHopper is traditionally, a good, solid, bike for the money. Haro makes a good bike in the specified price range, so does Trek.

The most bike for that money would be a used one. You can get much more bike that way, and in very good condition, if you do a little searching.

I haven't ridden any myself, but I've heard that Jamis makes great, affordable bikes.

Outside of that, a nice used bike in good condition will give you the best value.

Ok so getting a used bike is the best bang for buck, that being said which bike would be best even used.

Ordered a Trek from local bike shop on reccommendation from them. It came in yesterday and it was way to small, same guy who told me which bike & size to order denied it. I picked up a few catalogs and left, will not be going back to that shop.

I believe Mountain Bike magazine had a comparison this month in that exact price range. Giants are pretty nice...

Check reviews on MTBR.com as well.
