if its for just home protection, go for something that wont penetrate a wall behind your intruder. shot gun does this nicely.
O RLY?
For the record, I own a shotgun. Just point this out so people don't get unrealistic expectations.

Hmm, since money is no issue, something along the lines of this should suffice.

Where do you live that you feel you need a gun in the house to protect yourself?
My was was a cop, and we had two guns (duty and off duty weapon), but she had to have them locked up in a safe. She's never taken them out of the safe other than for work, and the off duty weapon gets used twice per year for qualifying.
You never hear of any home invasions or robberies being stopped by the victim having a gun, but you do hear about accidental shootings every week.
So, if you're worried about protection or security, get an alarm system and maybe learn some martial arts. Otherwise, move somewhere safer or get meds for your paranoia.

Sorry Fritzo, but you don't know what you're talking about. There are a ton of home invasions that are stopped by armed citizens. There are also a ton of home invasions that could have been stopped by armed citizens, which ended up in murder, rape, etc.
Just because your "something" (you left out a noun) never used her gun to protect herself doesn't mean no one else ever has. Applying one instance to everyone is beyond ignorant.

How about hiding a fake dead body in the closet, as soon as they find that sucker they'll be out the door quick.
While it's true that they penetrate, they penetrate less than other firearms, and, despite the sarcastic crack on the site about racking the shotgun not causing the "bad guy to faint", the fact is that racking a shotgun is a highly recogniseable sound that can tip off an intruder to the fact that you're armed before even having to come face-to-face with the intruder. As you've pointed out, many cases end with the intruder fleeing as soon as he or she realises that the "victim" has a weapon. It won't make a bad guy always run for the hills, but it will give him something to think about.Originally posted by: Amused
Yep, people have a LOT of fantasies about shot guns.Originally posted by: SoulAssassin

Another one is they help you hit your target because the shot spreads out. The reality is quite the opposite. In any normal sized house with a legal barral length shotgun, the grouping will be very tight. So tight that it's pointless to use one for this purpose. If you can't hit them with a bullet, you wont hit them with buck shot at 20 feet.

As for the grouping, yeah, it's not birdshot and it's going to be pretty tight, but still, a 2.5-3.5 inch grouping is undeniably larger than even a .45 inch bullet, so there is a _little_ bit more "forgiveness" with a shotgun's aim. Not much, and one obviously still needs to take careful aim, but it does give better odds.

Let me put it to you straight.
Nobody has ever accidentally killed a family member with pepper spray. That + a bat if they try to get up + 911 should be all you need.

Be assured. I am not an idiot. A firearm in the home has a greater chance of being used on a family member or friend than an invader. This is a fact.

It's sad that in this country we live in a culture of fear and paranoia fed to us by major news outlets and our own government. This fear compels us to arm up, and sometimes, when a person is not balanced in the head, go a shoot a bunch of people.
Don't get me wrong, the problem isn't with the guns, it's with our culture.
