Dark City might be another to fit the OP's catagory.

I was just popping back to add this. caught it on TV years ago not knowing anything about it and thought it was surprisingly good.

I feel so many films are spoilt by knowing too much about them before they are seen. Though the flipside of that would be going to see films you know nothing about which I can imagine would lead to a great deal of disappointment.

"Rigor Mortis" has a very serious WTF moment at the end. Well, at least, in my personal opinion. So does "Audition".

I read the book before I saw the movie, so it really wasn't a wtf event for me. Clark and Kubrick developed the novel and the movie at the same time. I saw the movie with some guys in my dorm at college. They were all gaga over the move and were like, 'what was the MEANING?? What was Kubrick trying to say??' I told them what was going on since I read the book. The idiots said, 'well that's just some guy's interpretation! You suck!' Just rolled my eyes and walked away.

See, that's exactly what I'm after: the WTF... OMG I need more! And talking about it for days on end.

I wouldn't say The Mist is WTFish. It's standard horror trope. The ending is a bit of a shocker especially since it differs so much from the story, but otherwise, nothing that makes you go WTF. Or..it could be I already knew the story so it didn't have that impact. I thought it was a great adaptation to a great story.

I KNOW there are movies out there not mentioned that are like this, but they are all escaping me right now, as most newer movies are simply 1 trick pony / twists.

Here's a few that might fit....

Triangle
Cube
as mentioned almost anything by Kubric.
Pi
Nothing
Enter the Void
Under the Skin
Coherence
Would you Rather?
John Dies at the End
Sucker Punch
had me 'wtfing' quite a bit, but I wouldn't say it was good.
Night Watch and Day Watch
Endhiran -
Hindi movie where whole movie is WTF badass.

To answer your question about 2010. I recently watched both back to back and did a review in the movies thread. Basically, 2010 on it's own is a decent film if taken by itself. It is in no way as good as 2001, and can seem dated due to the US/Soviet friction that plays a large part in the story, but it isn't a bad movie at all (IMO). It is much more straight forward though, and less wtf, although there definitely some wtf moments as more of the alien aspect is unveiled.

I forgot about John Dies at the End. I liked it even though the climax did not fit the rest of the movie. However i never thought it was cerebral, albeit still an original movie.

I honestly don't remember much about it, other than I really didn't know what was going on half the time.

not a movie but Genius Party and Genius Party Beyond

also slow tv on netfix. I mean over 7 hours of the front view of a train going down the tracks? who in their right mind would watch that??!

Donnie Darko did not age well at all IMO - loved it when it first came out, watched it again last year and it was terribad.
I didn't even care for it the first time. I think my friends hyped it up too much and I was just disappointed.
