Hetfield before he blew his chords. He's still pretty decent, but he just lacks the raw sound from the 80s albums.
Staley from Alice In Chains I like as well.
David Draiman is another favorite.

There's nothing I hate more though, than to have a singer who can't even come close to what they do on the album. I know there's plenty of examples, but listening to live stuff from Taproot is awful, the guy just completely lacks the vocal range that is on the album. I know that's typical of nu metal. While Draiman can't quite reach the same level as on the albums, he at least sounds the same and comes reasonably close.

You think Staley is metal?

I'd consider a good bit of Dirt Metal. He just doesn't scream all the time. That's a good thing. Screaming is awesome, but it gets old quick.

That's why I like progressive metal, screaming/growling + clean!

I can't say I like progressive metal. I love bands that scream (i.e. Will Haven, Killswitch, Hatebreed, Bury Your Dead and the likes), but I hate bands that sit around playing guitar solos and scales and consider it music. I have no clue if Opeth does that or not though. It's all just personal taste. I don't hate on the bands or anyone who listens to them - it's just not my cup of tea.

Yeah, I'm kind of amused at these responses like Deftones, AiC, etc.

Not that I don't like most of those bands, but we're talking metal here, not grunge or nu-metal or whatever.

People are confused I think.

Dio for consistency and longevity, but I love Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden), Rob Halford (Judas Priest), and Garm (Arcturus) as well.

Agreed. We need a definition here.

As usual, a metal thread gets hijacked by people that dont listen to "true" metal... Oh well

Jorn Lande is my favorite

And I have to 3rd (or 4th) Mikael Åkerfeldt , he is just awesome

I'm also a big fan of Bruce Dickinson.

James Hetfiled couldn't sing himsefl out of a wet paper bag, he's terrible. I can't imagine how anyone could call him the best.

I love pretty much every song on Headhunter...

You have to watch the video of Burnin' up the night, forward it to about 1:55 in and check out the look on the guitarist's face.
