Yeah, I'm kind of amused at these responses like Deftones, AiC, etc.

Not that I don't like most of those bands, but we're talking metal here, not grunge or nu-metal or whatever.

People are confused I think.

Agreed. We need a definition here.

Fair enough. I don't pay much attention to labeling bands as a certain genre. Especially when you start to take sub-genres into account, it gets ridiculous, and in my opinion, pointless. It gets even worse when people get really adamant about the labels and end up arguing about something so stupid (not that we are here, just other times I've seen genre labels brought up). I guess really though, I wasn't even thinking about best, but rather my favorite.

if we're being generous in the categorization of metal:

Devin Townsend
Jesse Leach
Daryl Plumbo
Chris Cornell (Jesus fucking Christ Pose)
Phil Anselmo
the guys who were in Sikth
Randy Blythe
Chris Ojeda

Tim "Ripper" Owens is pretty good. It's a shame he is no longer w/ Iced Earth. I also like King Diamond and Dave Mustaine.

Dio, Halford, Dickinson, and Hetfield kick ass. Åkerfeldt is a death metal god.

My experience stems from the 80's mostly during which I attended many concerts and metal/thrash shows. My favorite singer was and still is Rob Halford. If we were considering only recorded music and not live performances I'd seriously consider Ozzy above Halford, but since we aren't there is no contest. Ozzy blows in concert (always has as far back as I can remember).

I almost mentioned King Diamond but figured nobody here would know who he was. There were always rumors that his voice was doctored up on the albums, but I saw him in concert 2 times and he really sounded like that at the shows too. Both King and Mercyful Fate still get played in my house :)

Slave to the Grind probably qualifies him as metal. I've seen him four times. The first was before Skid Row hit it big. He could still sing then. He's never been as good since because he'd always get so stinking drunk before he took the stage.

Hetfield before he blew his chords. He's still pretty decent, but he just lacks the raw sound from the 80s albums.
Staley from Alice In Chains I like as well.
David Draiman is another favorite.

There's nothing I hate more though, than to have a singer who can't even come close to what they do on the album. I know there's plenty of examples, but listening to live stuff from Taproot is awful, the guy just completely lacks the vocal range that is on the album. I know that's typical of nu metal. While Draiman can't quite reach the same level as on the albums, he at least sounds the same and comes reasonably close.

You think Staley is metal?

Agreed. But how can you sit there and say the band Deftones isn't a metal band? I don't consider them "nu-metal" but you can use that term if you feel the need. Nu-Metal is still a form of Heavy Metal. Metal is a term that dates back to 60's and 70's with bands like Black Sabbath. Bands like Opeth and a lot of the other bands listed are not traditional "metal" bands in the sense of the term. They're either progressive, thrash, death, speed and the various other types of metal that have evolved from the start of Heavy Metal. There's nothing that makes those types of metal better than the others - they're just different.

So be amused, but you're also clueless. If you want a singer for each class of metal, so be it. But Deftones ARE a metal band, just of a different type.

Just to thread crap because we're talking about Skid Row.

I saw Down last week in Nashville. Dave "Snake" Sabo (Skid Row guitarist) was at the show and ended up getting on stage with Down during their last song Bury Me In Smoke to play guitar. Him and Hank Williams III both got up and played around with the band. Phil's younger brother also climbed up on Kirks back and they walked around the stage..lol.

That and Kyle Turley also came up on stage in the middle of the concert and said Phil was the reason he played like a madman on the football field.

Actually, there were quite a few famous musicians and people at that Down show. It was awesome though. Great show.
