Which singer, in your opinion, do you consider the best metal singer of all time? I'll add other names if I forgot any.

Isn't "metal singer" an oxy moron?

<lawnchair, beer>

Admittedly James Hetfield I enjoy

And if we're going down tangents, JMK's vocal ability > *

Hahahahahahaha,

Dave Matthews!!!!!!

Actually, the first thing that came to mind is Axle Rose. And now for the flames. BRING IT ON! I know, it's "hair metal" but damn that guy had (emphasis HAD) a voice. No one can deny that simple fact.

And I have to do it ... Jethro Tull is awesomer :)

Hetfield's great, but I always really liked Chad from Mudvayne. He had great screams and could actually carry a tune.

Chino Marino - Deftones
Phil Anselmo - Pantera / Down
Layne Staley - AIC

Mike Patton - Faith No More / Mr. Bungle / Fantomas / Tomahawk / Peeping Tom - He's probably the most underrated. The guy can flat out sing ANYTHING.

Hetfield before he blew his chords. He's still pretty decent, but he just lacks the raw sound from the 80s albums.
Staley from Alice In Chains I like as well.
David Draiman is another favorite.

There's nothing I hate more though, than to have a singer who can't even come close to what they do on the album. I know there's plenty of examples, but listening to live stuff from Taproot is awful, the guy just completely lacks the vocal range that is on the album. I know that's typical of nu metal. While Draiman can't quite reach the same level as on the albums, he at least sounds the same and comes reasonably close.
