Emerson, Lake & Palmer.

Pink Floyd puts on a good show. 🙂

Oh yeah forgot about Pink Floyd's laser orgy. My favorite part is in Comfortably Numb when they get to the scream and they just flood the stage with white light.

The J. Geils Band in their heyday, mid to late 70's.

They just went balls to the wall for almost three hours. I must have seen 8 to 12 of their gigs.

seconded... Barenaked Ladies and Dave Mathews Band are also awesome live.

worst live band ever? Third Eye Blind.... by a long shot.

I don't know about the best live band in general, but the best live performance I've ever seen is easy: Pink Floyd performing Comfortably Numb on the Pulse show. It is sublime--far better than the studio version, even. The most amazing live performance I've ever heard (recording or in person).

Best live performance I've ever seen is Opeth when they played their first US show at Milwaukee Metalfest.

That said, Motorhead and Metallica do put on awesome shows.

Another one of my favorite shows was several years back when In Flames played at the tiny 300 or so person venue, the Knights of Columbus hall in Arlington Heights. The show was just insane. That said, I lost touch with In Flames' music the last several albums. And I really don't care too much about their music these days.

I also have a ball every time I see Macabre live, they are fuggin hillarious!

I love that Steven Tyler's voice hasn't deteriorated at all through the years. He still hits every damn note with the same power he did 30 years ago.

There's a reason for that. Bands that started in the 60's had TERRIBLE PA systems. The singer usually had to shout at the top of their lungs to be heard over the drum kit. In the early 70's, super duper PA's started appearing, so the singer could sing once again. A lot of singers from early rock bands blew their voice out that way.

Only one? God, I don't know. Some of the better ones that I can recall were CSN (Acoustic), TMBG, The Pixies (they were much better live than I expected), the Eagles, and some from my youth that I remember having fun at were The Ramones, The Dead Kennedys, The Violent Femmes, Etta James, Dizzy Gillespie, Black Flag, ....

From what I've seen, either Streetlight Manifesto or the Toasters

Edit: Dropkick Murphys are also really awesome live.

Nice choices!!! Rancid is great live as well.

Murphy's will be in Wantagh in August!!!

For me,

Arena - Metallica, with Judas Priest a close second.
Club/Small Venue - Slayer, pure intensity in an intimate setting. Honorable mention goes out to GWAR for most unique. 😉 The Genitorturers put on an intense show too. 😀

Best live performance I saw was Van Halen with David Lee Roth in 1984.
I have to agree with the previous poster about Heart. I saw them in '77 or '78 and they sounded great.
And just for fun, KISS put on a great show from what I could see through the smokey haze that filled the arena in 1976.

i was in a live show of Infected Mushroom. awesome experience. they've started finally using more live instruments and their songs really cause everyone to get high. you have something like a massive party with everybody dancing at a live show. really really fun.
