<< Descartes: Comparing HTML writing to car mechanics is not really good. Mechanics need a number of tools because of physical limitations, if they could I'm sure they'd be happy to work on an engine that allowed them to work on everything with one wrench. HTML allows for this, pages written in Notepad are no different from pages written in other editors, provided the author writes it properly. >>

I wasn't comparing HTML writing to car mechanics, how is that even possible? I was comparing the use of tools of one activity to another. If ever I interviewed a developer for our company who said, "I use notepad for my development needs", he'd be out the door rather quickly. As one becomes more advanced, one acquires more advanced tools. It's really quite simple. Notepad is not a tool for a developer (again, other than simple documents, *not* development).

notepad plus (essentially notepad) do a search on google.

and what is do wrong with notepad? How are the other programs you guys have listed any better? The only one I have ever used is CuteHTML and that is basically just a fancy version of notepad. Some people don't have a couple hundred extra dollars (if that is the cost) on the latest version of Dreamweaver. I know I don't. That is why I just use a text editor. I made my whole website w/ a notepad.

I rotate between Dreamweaver, PHPed, and FirstPage (it really is good) depending on what I'm doing.

i've got homesite (company provided version 4)...not very happy with it, so far. it appears to have no support for complex tables...

seems just like a beefed up version of notepad, to me...

That's great, but what does your website do? I'm not involved with developing personal pages, I'm involved with building e-commerce frameworks, and I can't manage that in notepad.

I'm not limiting this strictly to html. Technically, you could build almost anything in notepad, in any language, but who in there right mind does? I, and every other developer I know, has needs that notepad can't fulfill.

Interview for a development job and tell them you use notepad...

Okay most of this has already been said, but
EditPlus is my fav. I used HomeSite but it was TOO much and its FTP stuff was a pain. People who say Notepad must not do a lot of coding. Dreamweaver is nice when you are new, it can do lots of tablework and you can look at the real code and edit it fairly easily, I liked it better than Frontpage (haven't used latest). Oh, and I tried CuteHTML and it is half decent but really isn't nearly as good as EditPlus.
