I would love to agree with you, but Lateralus really didn't do too well. I can't wait for the new one though. Could be their best yet.
 
The only one that I can think of right away is U2
The Joshua Tree -> Rattle and Hum -> Achtung Baby ->not so much Pop -> All that you can't leave behind

They're bigger albums always do well, although they've had some smaller releases that weren't as widespead.
