does anything beat the stretch metallica had starting with their first album all the way till black album, i am talking about pure musical briilliance on back to back (and maybe financial success to similar degree) records

GNR comes to mind but they had the spagetti record somewhere in between (which wasnt very acclaimed and didnot do particularly well as well)

Led Zep I -> II -> III -> IV -> Houses Of The Holy -> Physical Graffiti

That's gotta be up there, as I can't think of a single bad song in the bunch.

Dark Side of the Moon for Pink Floyd has got to be in the top 3 biggest sellers of all time. Too lazy to look it up though.

Actually, his latest album was very well done. He's got three singles out on the radio alone right now. And he doesn't have many of what out there? Fans? You're kidding yourself. I used to be a huge fan, not so much anymore, but I have to admit that he hasn't had flop once over the last 7 years.

I don't think it's a coincidence that no Rap artist is even in the running for all time sales, despite the fact that that crap has been popular for nearly 20 years.

I remembe Artists like U2, the Doobie Brothers, the Police and Springsteen ruling the roost for extended periods of time.

Aaah, thats where you're wrong. Believe me, rap is not my favorite genre, but I still enjoy it when its not all about the bling bling. But Master P, Ice T, Russell Simmons, and Puff Daddy have all propelled themselves through their music (except Simmons) to be some of the richest people in the entertainment business.

Don't forget about Tom Petty, David Bowie, and Elton John. They were all at that caliber.

heh, early Elvis and the Beatles didn't do too bad, commercially/artistically. Stevie Wonder, Elton John, David Bowie put together some nice runs of albums during the 70's.

As far as commercial success, Garth Brooks and Shania Twain have had some huge consecutive albums.

And somebody's got to say it:

Michael Jackson :D

I agree. I can only imagine where they would be if Bonzo didn't drink himself to death.

AC/DC had a great bunch of albums in a row.

Yeah, it's hard to say. When Bonzo died, rock 'n roll was changing and Zep was trying to figure out where they were going. You can tell this from In Through the Out Door - they were moving into a different direction and that album had more influence than usual from John Paul Jones than from Jimmy Page. It's likely they would have continued on that path as the smack habit looks like it was finally catching up with Page. With Coda, which IMO you can't even count, Bonzo was already dead and that was just a compilation of things that never made it to other albums.

Oh, Rush is probably in there too, although you're hit and miss with people who like them. They've got like 16 studio CDs

That's awesome, I was just Googling to see what my favourite stretch of Rush albums was. I went with:

- Permanent Waves
- Moving Pictures
- Exit... Stage Left (live I think)
- Signals
