mx400/mx500(400's with a sliding volume control thing) are pretty good. under $15 usually.
so are the koss plugs, i got those for 10 when they were onsale at circuitcity.
the sony ex51/71's are suppose to be good as well, but i've never tried them before, ~30-35 from amazon.

for headphone type, maybe the koss porta pro's or the sennheiser px100/200's.

yes

it's better for isolation of outside noises

my mx400 are good but it's impossible to listen to music on the train without using ear-dmaaging volumes so i got some sharps. now it's much more listenable

I just got the Sony EX71SL's. My god, I love canalphones. The bass is really deep, and they're really small. 51=71, except 71's cord detaches in the middle so you can attach it to your MD without it being too long.

I know that audiophiles say there are better things out there, but not unless you wanna spend $100+.

The apple ones apparantly are good too. Do a search, AT did a review comparision of the apple ones and the 71SL's. IIRC, The apple's feel better, but the 71's have better sound quality. Both around the same price.

Bought mine at amazon for $29.99, $34 shipped. or something like that, came to $40 CDN. Good deal because retail these go for $90CDN, or like.. $60US?

That's what I got from Amazon for $32 last week. This week they jacked the price up by 5 bucks tho :)
They are pretty good. I guess I would rather have the 51's in hindsight since the extension socket is kinda heavy and pulls on my left ear bud. But then again if I ever get a remote, my opinion will change.

talk to the user Ipods, I'm sure he could find you some very nice headphones for cheap that his brother was very satisfied with and was not a scam

Yup, I have to agree. The EX71SL's are sweet.

i have the sony canal phones. my favorite <$50 headphone of all time. they are suitable for the commute to work because they block out so much noise, but not very good for jogging. you get too much stethoscope type noise from wires jostling around.

i lost all my rubber earpieces except for one piece, so i cant wear them anymore. I'll have to buy some new ones to replace them. one thing i dont like about my 51 series is the cord is too long when you use the ipod+remote. I think I'll go with the 71series shorter cord and not use the extension.

I would suggest Sennheiser PX100's or some Grado SR60's. I think either would be a fine choice. I would be partial to the SR60's since I own the SR80's and love them to death, but I don't know if I would feel comfortable wearing them outside my home. There's just something about looking like a 1940's ham radio operator that would make me feel a bit uneasy on the subway or on the street. The PX100's are much more stylish in a modern sense, and would be more comfortable (Grados are infamous for NOT being the most comfortable headphone) but I'm not sure if they would sound as nice. Headroom seems to think they are a great budget headphone, though. Either would be a great choice for a portable.

i got the 71SL's and they're pretty damn good, my only problem is without the extention cord its too short. If I go jogging i have to put the extention cord on. The connector that plugs into the headphone jack swings and pulls out the headphones. I got it through amazon for 32 bucks

Hate to break it to ya, but it's not the headphones. Among many, many other reasons not to buy iPods is their notoriously bad sound quality. The price you pay for being trendy. Sorry man.

No, just being realistic - something people who overlook all the iPods' faults and overpay for one anyway seem incapable of.

for unamped casual use, you cant beat koss porta-pros for its bang for buck and balance. koss the plugs are quite nice if you mod them, way better than any sony offering.

Errr the stock headphones are above average (read the fskn specs on it, but to say the quality of music on the Ipod sux? Sorry to break it to you, but it's not. Maybe you should listen/download better quality music instead of 128kb garbage.

Read the thread, I didn't say the stock headphones were bad. The iPod's low sound quality is actually a very common complaint, though many iPod buyers (rather those whose parents buy iPods for them) are too young & naive to admit any fault with it. And that's just the sound quality, I won't go over its other faults, which have been covered in other threads.
