I thought they got caught as I found this article here on the bottom of page "The MOD and LOD Squads"
I will admit, that I got my first computer in 1994/95 and remember hearing about cDc (Cult of the Dead Cow) who were famous for the Back Orifice prog, and that was the first one to hit me.

They also put ALL their games on the CD that worked the same way.
A hack was released that allowed one to access all them games full versions for free.
