I can't choose just one, but my favorite games ever are Total Annihilation, Deus Ex, Final Fantasy VI, Earthbound, and Fallout 1 and 2.
 
Fallout 1 & 2

It was amazing how they mixed such insane humor into EVERY single aspect of the game. There wasnt a night i played the game i didnt laugh my ass off and then blow a tire-sized hole into someone's chest.

I actually just recently installed Fallout 2 and am playing it right now even.

My second favorite would be..

XCOM: Apocalypse
 
Planetfall, by Infocom. One of only two games in my entire history of playing to make me weep like a little girl. 😉
 
I was quite a gamer(nerd) back in the day. I elect the following for each platform:

Gameboy: BATMAN
runner up: Mario Brothers 2: 6 Golden Coins

....who am I kidding, I don't have time for this, haha I gotta get back to work, but I'll edit this later.
 
Wow what a toughy so many great games. I'd have to say for the most realistic FPS that is free, America's Army hands down. 😉
 
All you children have not said DOOM / DOOM 2?

Sorry but the MIDI sound byte SHOTGUN is still the best sound effect of all time.

on console, i hope you mean. cause doom and quake came out long before 007. quake was probably the first real big multiplayer FPS, and frankly, nothing comes quite as close to it still!
 
For me the "best game ever" has got to be Ultima 4: Quest of the Avatar on commodore 64. It was my very first "real" RPG style game i ever let myself get drawn into. It was also the very first game ever that made me stay up till the wee morning hours killing monsters in dungeons, collecting loot, and i found "inventory management" fasinating!

The contents of the box were also totally amazing. I have never seen something so detailed such as a cloth map and other trinklets that allowed me to better understand the world i was in and exploring, living and breathing. The idea of having to be forced to make good and evil choices with every step i made was totally enlightnening to me as a then 14 yr old kid.

To me, this game was truly the start of my now long RPG and overall gaming "career" i now so much enjoy some 20+ years later.
 
To many good games to say which is best because they are on par with each other IMO. Those being Zelda: Ocarina of Time,Zelda Windwaker,Resident Evil 4,UT series,GTA 3 through San Andreas,Quake and 2,Half Life 2,Counter Strike,Metal Gear series and a few others. I would rate them all about the same.

Chrono Trigger
FF7
Castlevania: SotN

I love my PC games, but my favorites of all-time are mostly console titles.

Massive Assault and Exploration (MAX) I and II

Good call on Dark Reign too... Very good game that didn't sell too well "FOR THE CAUSE!!!" LOL 🙂.
