A few years ago, I'd have said Metal Gear Solid, but that series is dead to me. So many shitty sequels and offshoots, it's pathetic. The original game is still good, but I don't hold it in high esteem any more.

Grim Fandango - Never heard of
Half Life - Never really liked (I don't like HL2 either, sue me)
Gran Turismo - Spent A LOT of time on this game. Loved it.
Starcraft - Played quite a bit, but I suck at RTS games. I don't really care for it anymore
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Loved it, but never beaten it. I want to go back and play through it again someday
Metal Gear Solid - Reasoning above
Fallout 2 - Played fallout 1 & 3. Didn't care for them, doubt I'd care for Fallout 2.
Mario Party - Meh.
Resident Evil 2 - Cool game. First and only resident evil game I beat. But, I don't remember much from it.

I definitely played Gran Turismo more than any other game when it first came out. I always buy Gran Turismo when it comes out (1-4) but I don't play them as much later down the road like I would starcraft or half life.

Oops...I realize now that I forgot Baldur's Gate 😳.

I was going to put Rainbow Six on the list, but with only ten options, I already had 3 shooters on there (HL, RE2, MGS).

I figured since "casual party games" are a substantial genre nowadays, I would put the original on there: Mario Party. I didn't figure it would get as many votes though, this being a forum of mostly hardcore gamers.

Tough poll, that was a gooood year.

My vote goes to Half Life...I played an embarrassingly amount of hours in CS. MGS is a close second IMO. It's grown into a huge franchise...same with SC.

i didn't play HL until 2004 due to the megahype for HL. Pleasantly suprised by how awesome it was and how it didn't feel dated. I know it doesn't make sense but the 98-era graphics just didn't bother me. My vote.

Hard to pick between Half Life and Ocarina.

I'd say Half Life has lasted the test of time a lot better though.

Baldur's Gate. I originally thought Planescape Torment but that didn't come out till 1999. Two best RPGs of all time.

I didn't have a PC in 98, so I ended up playing HL after HL2. Ocarina of Time is still my favorite game among any genre. 1998 also had Banjo-Kazooie, which I played the shit out of too.

Fallout 2 - Played fallout 1 & 3. Didn't care for them, doubt I'd care for Fallout 2.
Mario Party - Meh.

fallout 2 was better than 3 IMO (i do like fallout 3, its a totally different look and feel tho), and i think better than 1 too. the story was more involving, and some mechanics were changed making it a good game. i voted for fallout2 before i thought about baldurs gate and system shock 2 tho, with those two in the running id have my top 3. half life in 4th too.

I was also primarily an N64 gamer in those days. Loved Banjo-Kazooie .

Damn. Quake 2 came out in Dec of '97. That's close enough for me to count it as '98.

I say Quake 2.

😀

planescape torment! i thought i was the only one that played it for the longest time, hehe. great game, they really needed to expand on it tho. i always hoped for a sequel or xpac

I can't even imagine all the hours I put in Mario Kart 64, Wave Race, Star Fox 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Ocarina of Time, and Majora's Mask. I had to stick to single-player games most of the time, because I lived in the country (no neighborhood kids) and my sister was a piss-poor sport about games.

Oh man, I played all of those too (still have the games in my closet). Goldeneye was really the only multiplayer I played with my friends. I remember playing through Banjo-Tooie, Jet Force Gemini and Perfect Dark as well. Rare was an incredibly good company in those days.

I'm thinking I should try to find a used copy of F-Zero X on eBay; I think I only rented that game once or twice. *sigh* Getting so nostalgic here (and starting to feel a bit old too 😀)
