Best Game of 1998

IMO, the best year for gaming. So many classics.

Counter-Strike? HL came out in 1997 if I'm not mistaken, but CS debuted 98. I swear, that game ruled us till 2004 before Source really took it on.

Edit:I take that back. Now that I count school years, 1998 was not the right year. HL was end of 98 and CS was '99. So I take HL in that case.

Starcraft at a close 2nd. I never got into it as much as I should have. I didn't really get into it until the 2000s when I was bored of CS. It really took off for me in like 2004-2005. By then gaming on a 24" with SC1 felt REALLY weird. Try that with a 27" which I did a few months back before SC2 came on beta.

CS was ok but I don't think it REALLY took off until late 00/01, when the big wave came in.
'98 was beta 4 or something, those days where it was p90 spam.

I hadn't really gotten into PC games at that point so have to say it was Zelda OT. I don't even think we bought our first home computer until '97 or so when we got a 75 MHz HP. By '98, that was outdated and not really able to play most computer games that were coming out, and I was still perfectly content with N64 games like Goldeneye, Starfox, and Zelda.

I'm always quite a few years behind on games. I didn't play much Half-Life in 1998, but starting around 2000, I played like crazy. Most recently, I played Grim Fandango (again).

HL is overrated, its just a solid FPS, pretty much like Halo... I cant think of anything that really makes it stand out from other FPS... I can think of 3 FPS release in 98-99 right now that are way better than HL:

Thief
System Shock 2
Deus Ex

Gameplay wise they are all alot more varied and interesting (specially Thief being a really unique stealth based game)
