Until you have played the game "snipes" you have no idea what great dos gaming really was... That game gave me bad dreams... The dream consisted of being trapped in a snipe world with green snipes coming after you... You would wake up thankful that you were not thrown into the eternity of the game.

Snipes

Settlers 2 Gold IS still one of my all time favorite.
I have an old system with a fully configured win98 and a creative BS16 just for all these oldies.
some more good ones are:
Tyrian 2000
Flashback
Colonization

Also one of best sites to get old games is www.abandonia.com

If you are European, X-Com: UFO Defense (really poor name imo) was called UFO: Enemy Unknown (which sounds very fitting).

Space Crusade is a nifty little turnbased game where you take a squad of Space Marines onto various Space Hulks to do certain interesting missions such as Find and Retrieve, Seek and Destroy etc. Classic Warhammer 40k action.

Thanks for the recommendations. It's been a while since i've used DOSBox, i forgot how to use it. If i remember right i couldn't get the speed correct last time i tried it anyways.

Just use ctrl+F12 to increase the CPU cycles and ctrl+F11 to decrease them; you'll get the hang of it after toying around a bit with each individual game.

My favorite DOS games were X-Com, Master of Orion, Steel Panthers, and Master of Magic. There are 2 freeware versions of Steel Panthers out. A free version of the concept game that preceeded MOO. I think there is also at least one clone of MOM. You can also find used copies of all those games.

Civilization 2 was what first brought Master of Magic to my attention, was a great game. Master of Orion my dad got me into and it was fun. Civilzation (the first one), Master of Orion & Master of Magic definitely get my vote also Championship Manager which can still suck entire lives away.

While it's not DOS there is a free version of Civilization that you could try: http://www.freeciv.org/index.php/Freeciv

yeah, designing the tracks were fun, to bad there no racing games today that allow you to design tracks.

i remember doing some of the jumps, if you hit the ramp just right. your car would just launch like 200 feet into the air and fall back down.

Star Control 2.

Too bad the sound will suck unless you've got an older Sound Blaster card. 🙁

Edit: The UQM remake may appeal to you, but it didn't work out for me.
