I really PCLinuxOS...it's got features of Mandrake with apt-get, KDE 3.3, plenty of applications, and has a very nice "Windows-like" shell. Just download the bootable CD to test it out and see if you like it.

Xandros is a good one especially for office apps. Look into it. I heard it's good for newbs im considering looking into myself. Because im a newb I've been using mandrake. It's really difficult to get all you hardware workgin right. Xandros i haven't tried but i own a copy of it.

Ubuntu. Just ditched Windows for it yesterday. So far so good 🙂 Easiest distro I've had the pleasure of using.

I had been away from Linux for several years (redhat 7 was my last), and the folks here pointed me to Mandrake (10.1 official), and I LOVE IT! It is very easy to set up and configure, but still has GREAT shell support, and all of the true linux stuff is right there, so while you have your "windows-like" shell, you still get the power of true Linux. I recommend it completely to anyone wanting to jump into Linux that does not have a ton of experience with it, but does not want to be limited by thier distro either.

Mandrake is what you stick on your wife/girlfriends computer. I wouldnt really consider it a good learning version at all but is fun to play with. It is one of the better "all-in-one" linux packages around though big applause for the "windows like" updating. Rarely have to hunt for drivers. And has a windows95/macOS9 feel to it. depending on what shell you use of course....

So another vote for Mandrake for a month or two for feel then off to Unbuntu/Debian.

When I downloaded Mandrake, I was looking for a Linux distro to server 2 different purposes. 1) Provice a stable OS for my wife to work in that won't get me grumbled at, and 2) to provide a easier distro to use for me to step back into linux (I used to work on HP-UX systems, and had Redhat7 at home, but it has been several years, so I am totally rusty). So I would say that I am using for EXACTLY the reasons you described above. Eventually, I will grab one of the harder distros (Maybe gentoo, and I already have Debian to play with), but I need an easy one at first.
