Best deal on newsserver access?

Homerboy

Lifer
Apparently my Astraweb account has expired (was using the $39 for 3 months for as long as I can remember). Though I can not recall the last time I saw a charge on my debit card for the service. Alas today, my loign no longer works.

Is the above deal still the best out there? Anything better?
Anyone want a referral or anything?

Thanks.

(yeah yeah I know... 1st rule and all that... )

I'm currently on a $11/mo deal with Astraweb and I don't want to switch. I don't know anything about the quality of this company but here you go.

Copied from a recent FW post:

"$6 Unlimited Usenet from NewsgroupDirect
NewsgroupDirect is offering their unlimited accounts for $6.00 per month for the life of the account.
To get the deal:
1. Go to newsgroupdirect.com/signup. Pick the unlimited plan.
2. On the billing page make sure you enter coupon code ngd455983. You'll get a confirmation message that the discount has been applied.
$6.00 is a fantastic price for unlimited usenet. It's about the best deal you're going to find. I started out paying $30 per month a few years back."

I never understood the need for Usenet at all in 2011.

If you want 'warez', there are plenty of torrent sites. Same for posting community.

So what is the need for Usenet at all nowadays, especially at cost?

If you think torrent sites will give you even a fraction of the speed or selection as Newsgroups do, you are completely mistaken.

I use Blocknews and buy in 200GB chunks. I only use about 50GB a month so it works well for me.

I always max out my ISP's speed using torrents.. (2.5mb/sec).

As for selection.. what about it? All TV shows I missed are up within 8-12 hours. You can't beat that, nevermind general 'warez' which are accessible.

They are up within mins of being released on NGs.
Torrents simply DO_NOT compare.

I took a chance with Supernews.com
Signed up.
Entered login info and it won't connect me.

Gah...

That's it? You pay premium because you can't wait 8 hours for the show you Just missed? You always come home the minute the show is over? D:

All other non time sensitive programs are on equal level, no?

I have a friend that uses newsgroups, he says about 1/6th of the shit he downloads (he DL's a lot) has password's. And about the same % has viruses. Usenet sounds like an adventure to me.

As the other poster said, TV shows are up in minutes. Newsgrops max out my 15mbps connection within 5 seconds of downloading an NZB. There's way less viruses, trojans, and retarded password protected files. Torrents are for total noobs.

Not to mention newsgroups are way more private.

Your friend is wrong or uses a shitty NZB site.

I have used usenet for nearly 15 years now. It still has some of the best discussion content of any . Sci.electronics groups are great with world class engineers participating. Binary groups you have to be careful with like anything.

The people that expect it to be a click and download free for all are the ones that get the virus, password, etc.

Funny, that's what torrents were like when I gave it a shot.

I haven't had a SINGLE virus or pw file because any torrent sites worth their salt have a community thumbing up/commenting/revealing any passwords.

If you spend money for Usenet, fine by me. As an outsider, I personally don't see any advantages over it from what you've mentioned so far.

Torrents-
Bandwidth: Always maxed just like Usenet
Selection: I always found what I needed

So... only advantage is downloading the TV show within minutes they aired? And you pay $6-30 a MONTH for this alone? Laugh.

I guess like doing anything you shouldn't be, there's always risk involved 😀 My friend uses Usenet because he has a 60 gig cap on his internet, Torrenting doesn't work well with a cap.
