Sony CRT's are among the best, especially the G and GS series.

Arguably the best overall CRT ever made (other than some clones that were the same monitor on the inside and a few slightly modified versions that were much more expensive), but it's extremely difficult to find a properly working and calibrated one these days.
I think that 997DF you have is a shadow mask, so it won't look quite as good as an AG tube.
The sony F520 is better than that monitor, but it's also impossible to find one at a reasonable price. For that reason I just 'settled' for an FW900. I actually went back to CRT from lcds; 2x 2001fps are getitng sold and the FW900 is taking their place. WMV HD content looks so gorgeous, as does CS:S at 1920x1200🙂
Yeah I've also heard about the F series having reliability problems. My monitor is a Grade A refurb that I believe was sealed from the manufacturer, so hopefully it'll last a while, at least until LCDs get significantly better (screen door effect be damned) or a new technology emerges such as OLED.
yeah, I can't stand that effect. It actually makes LCDs more straining on the eyes for me than CRTs. I got that one I linked to just a few months ago, so I'm thinking that it should hold me over for at least another three years. I guess at least one of the new displays technologies will be out by then.

Those do have a tighter AG, and I haven't seen one in person so I can't comment on it. However, as far as consumer level displays, I have been more impressed with Dimondtrons than Trintrons. That isn't brand loyalty either; I have two Trinitrons which I like very much, but they have more geometry issues than similar priced Dimondtrons i have seen.

Last i was aware the were two kinds of CRTs
Shadow Mask and Aperture Grill
The Aperture Grill is much brighter and most people like them for CAD & Graphics.
However the aperture grills have two wires that are visible in the screen that hold up the AG. If you pull up a white document the size of the entire screen on an AG then you should see them about 1/4 (the screen height) from the top & bottom. They are horizontal. This doesn't botther most people however its worth mentioning. AG's are also flat screen.
The shadow mask is older technology which is usually cheaper and have curved screens (like tubes). Samsungs adds a glass lense to the front of their shadow mask units to make them flat screen (This adds weight). This way you have a flat screen & no AG wires, however the shadow masks are not as bright as AGs.
If you plan to spend big money on a screen I'd highly recommend investing in an LCD.

I had two Nokia 445xi+'s, gorgeous monitors... both died within a month of each other, both completely diff deaths. One shorted out internally, and would stay on for about 20 mins and then die, requiring a swift hit or kick to turn back on. The other lost quality of the period of two weeks and then just stopped working 🙁

sony and viewsonic. I have a sony 20in tv that has lasted about 20 years and the picture is still perfect and i have an old viewsonic monitor that is will working since 95.

I have the Samsung 997DF. Good monitor for the price and the best 19" monitor you can buy brand new.

True, once I saw the lines for myself I decided that I could never accept AG because it would always be noticable to me.
LCDs have a noticable space between pixels, blur noticably compared to CRTs (even the best ones, but it's not very bad at all), and sometimes have backlighting problems along with one or more dead pixels. AG monitors have the 1 or 2 damper wires (depending on size) and slightly blurry text. Shadow Mask monitors don't have great color reproduction or vibrance compared to AG displays. Everything has cons, it's just a matter of what your personal preferences are. 🙂
Even a lot of PSPs have some dead or stuck pixels. Perfection is impossible to achieve in reality, but technology is improving. 😉
