What cablegod said.

Failing that, anything with a low APR, no fee for balance x-fers, no annual fee. All other "benefits" are all but worthless.

Discover isn't a bad first card. Cashback bonus was nice back when, uh, I could actually pay it off every month. I think it has 19.9%, you can get lower than that but if you haven't established credit for yourself yet it can be tough. Most telemarket or mail spam offers have terrible interest rates and membership fees.

There is no good credit card....it is a scam!...btw, I'm 45 years old and have NEVER used a personal credit card. You can do anything I can do...NO CREDIT CARDS!

cc tip of the day:

Never pay a monthly or yearly fee to have the honor to use their credit card. Unless they're offering guarenteed $100,000 limit with 1.0% apr don't pay an annual fee.

Tominator,

I agree with your statement that you are 45 years old but I do think having a credit card is very helpful to our way of life. Get the best credit card and take the responsibility if you forget to pay a bill on time. If you read the rules of the card and choose it wisely the only one responsible for losing yourself money is you.

I don't get that. I just recently convinced my mom to get a CC, then there was a bill from visa, it was a $59 annual fee and my mom paid it. then my uncle said she shouldn't have. why? I thought you're obligated to pay since you're using their service. and next time, if we don't pay, is anything bad going to happen?

It never hurts to call them and say you've made a huge mistake. Talk about how you were in a rush and it was for your disadvantaged son who just wanted it so he could buy his real parents some presents for Christmas. I believe you're obligated to pay unless they're nice.

There are too many cards without an annual fee to pay ones that due. <---hehe

<edit> and i'm not sure what happends if you don't pay

But that is the trap that all too many get into. NEVER in life volunteer to walk into a trap...I use a debit card, thank you. And it is good anywhere you're credit card is...

Note, they [the Credit card Co.] can state ANY rate they want....now...if your payment is 1 day late...be it USmail or Act Of God...they can indiscrimately RAISE your interest rate to the maximum amount at THEIR discretion! All very Legal!

There are many organisations trying to reform laws regarding this....if you are smart, you'll never put yourself in the position of needing their services...avoid ALLLLLLL credit!...You WILL thank me when you are older..

The best credit card isn't a "credit" card at all, but a debit card. You're not borrowing money that way, it's YOUR money. Plus you get to enjoy the very real convieniences and benefits having a "visa logo" card with you provides (especially useful for 'emergency money' purposes, like paying a tow truck driver or any other conditions where access to funds becomes important suddenly).

Ahhhh, now we have debit cards being addressed. Now it is never necessary to use a credit card for purchases unless your bank account doesn't have enough money in it. And if that's the case make sure your purchases are only for emergencies.

I stayed credit card free for all of University and was really proud of myself until I was turned down to buy a car (despite a great full time career job) for the one reason that I "had no credit history".

I had to ask my dad to co-sign the loan. I went and got a Visa card and used it for gas for a year, paying it off right away each month. Paid no interest, and got my house mortgage instantly due to my now "good credit rating".

It stinks - if you can avoid them it can be a good way to avoid debt. But be careful that you don't loose out due to no credit history. Anyone know how to build a good credit rating WITHOUT a card?

Are checking accounts counted as "good credit" on your credit report? I would think yes, if they are on there at all.

I don't believe a debit card even today offers as much protection as a credit card. After some laws passed a few years back the situation improved. But (and I have no proof of this [but when has a lack of facts ever stopped me?!]) the debt industry probably lobbied to ensure debit cards remain more risky than credit cards simply to keep people using credit cards so they keep their hefty profits.

It's going to be very hard to build credit without using credit cards. I really don't understand why people are so against them. As long as you are responsible enough not to rack up more charges than you can pay for, using credit cards can be very convenient. And if you pay your bill each month, it doesn't cost you anything more than using cash.

Having a checking account won't really help your credit. Your credit report shows your open credit accounts, with balances and limits, any delinqencies reported against you, and inquiries to your credit record.

I'm far from an expert on this but i just turned 20 a few weeks ago, and i have about $15,000 available in revolving credit accounts and a car lease in my name. Basically just from using my cards and paying them off on-time.

LB, I buy little I'm unsure of. I've never needed the so-called protection a Credit card provides. BTW, I throw away more offers on credit cards and car loans in a week than you guys would believe...!!!

I have Discover and Yahoo Visa

The Discover gives me a 7% discount at Barnes and Noble and 1% cash back

The Yahoo Visa gives me 1% back in "points" that I can use at yahoo's shopping service. Purchases I make through Yahoo give me 2% back in points. I use Discover where ever I can, there are quite a few retailers and restaurants that don't accept Discover though, that's why I have them both. If you are going for your first card, go for Visa or Mastercard...

You can check Yahoo's web site for the Visa, or check the list of affiliates at First USA who manages their card service... Good Luck :)

Check also Bankrate.com for credit card selection help

fragarific,

Thank you. :)

Tominator,

Can you beat my 3-4 offers per week?

CJM,

<< As long as you are responsible enough not to rack up more charges than you can pay for >>

Put a whole 16" pizza on the table and more often than not most people will overeat that day. Same principle with credit cards. Nobody's force of will is strong enough to stay out of debt forever. CC companies know this and banks holding the debt enjoy high profits and thus will do anything they can including modifying the law to keep this that way. Did you know the CC companies recently lobbied congress to make it nearly impossible for someone to declare personal backruptcy due to credit card debt? They did.

my theory:

If you get an advertisment you're not getting the best deal, they have to pay for the mailings some how. Of course, you'll find exceptions, but my 1-2 cc applications a week ALL have annual fees!

[sarcasm] I once saw only a $7 monthly fee! WOW! [/sarcasm]
