Holy crap... I don't really know of *anyone* that still uses C9 lights... that's like a death wish!

Yeah MM's were extremely dim that far away. Pity.

The next phase will be high power LED's. For quickly flashing displays they will rule as their decay and attack times are damn near instant.

A friend of mine that has a display in Texas got a late start putting her lights up - I don't think she started until November 1. She said that a few days ago, she opened her door, and a couple of policemen were standing there - she immediately thought something had happened to a family member or something. Instead... "Marilyn? Where are your christmas lights? You *are* going to put them up, right? If you need any help, the entire force would be glad to give you whatever assistance we can..."

That's awesome!

Yeah... I'm seeing more and more LED lights go up, of varying quality. Most of them draw so much less power than MM that you can run exponentially more for the same cost (or again, I'm told that, I've not personally worked with LEDs yet).

PlanetChristmas's position is that 2006 will be the year to begin widespread deployments of LEDs rather than MMs. The prices will probably have continued to decrease a bit more by then, and of course, the existing "tried and true" display owners will be able to gain knowledge from those people that went with LEDs for this year... both the positive and negative sides. 🙂

Almost as good as the dude who allowed his xmas lights to be controled via the internet, publically!

If you're talking about the man who said that his name is "Alex", then he fooled the world. A few people started investigating things, and he was concluded a fraud - the integration wasn't actually there, it just looked like it was to the public.

He was actually exposed on some big TV show... Good Morning America, or the Today show, perhaps... I can't quite remember. There was an outrageous controversy at PlanetChristmas about it.

However, I know of one person that has actually integrated his display with web controls, and it's streamed via webcam. I *think* that a few more people were going to do the same thing this year, but I'm not sure.

I was personally thinking about buying a VOIP phone line, connecting it to an Asterisk PBX, and using AutoAttendant handlers, manipulate the display via phones. That way the audience could have some input into what is happening - albeit one or two people at a time. 🙂

:Q this thread has brought out the Christmas light enthusiests! Me and my pal just started a business setting up Christmas lights this year, so it has been on my mind CONSTANTLY for the past 3 weeks (dang people wait till the last minute to hire us, and yet they still want it before Thanksgiving :| I'm tired)

We've got a website where we are gonna put the pics of all the houses we do on it. It's http://www.newstarlights.com We don't do fancy animated displays though, just sharp elegant looking ones.

Good luck!

A local mega-church (Rhema) has a very impressive Christmas light display. It's cool in a different way though, it doesn't use crazy timings or anything, just lots of lights that change colors and do the "regular" flickering. They turn a whole little park into light, and my favorite is the suspension bridge with lights that go back and forth.
Also the giant Christmas Tree on the top of the church that you can see from a couple miles away.

It would be cool to sync it with something faster.

what's the actual name of that song? I know it's not 'orgy scene' (even if that's what it may be known for from A Clockwork Orange... FETCH that movie rules, that music brings me back😛)
