Best Cheap Rum

I don't care much for rum, so I need some help here. What is the most common rum used in bars? Silver/light? Gold? Spiced?

Here are the rums I've heard of that are good and fairly cheap:

Bacardi
Ronrico
Castillo Gold
Cruzan
(Sailor Jerry is too expensive, even more than Bacardi)

I'm putting up a poll, but I'm not including Bacardi. I know that some people like Bacardi, but I really don't ever find anyone that's tried a lot of rums that prefers Bacardi, it's just popular because it advertises. If you feel differently, I'd appreciate your feedback.

Thanks for your help, ATOT alcoholics. 😉

Bicardi white or Cap'n spiced for cheap drunk!

Good rum? No idea (cheap college student :laugh🙂

I once had this rum from the Dominican Republic. It had sticks in it to increase the alcoholic content...On the back it said it increased 'El Vigor Sexual'. Was some local thing...When you added it to soda, it created the same frothy effect you got when making a root beer float...

I vote that. But since it's not here, I'm gonna say Castillo Gold.

Captain Morgan is not cheap. Not at all. Bacardi isn't too pricey, but there are cheaper, and I'm betting there are cheaper AND better.

cap'n for the cheap bastards.

Prices for a 1.75L:
Castillo Gold, Cruzan, Ronrico < $20
Bacardi < $25
Captain Morgan > $25

For the last time, Cap'n is NOT for a cheap drunk.

lol. that's ALL cheap rum. and Cap'n while good to get drunk, is pretty damn far from good rum.

Do you consider it premium?

No way! It's just expensive. That's why I didn't list it originally.

Private stock is probably the poorest price/quality of any alcoholic beverage I can think of.

well....maybe Grey Goose/Belvedere.

If you're not going to display the bottles go as cheap as possible. The vast majority of rum drinks are sweet and/or fruity and nobody can tell a premium rum from a middle tier rum from a cheap-o rum when it's used that way. If people can see the bottles at least spring a couple of extra bucks for Bacardi, it will be much more recognizable than the other brands and anything else will look like you cheaped out.

u sure that was rum? it was probably mama juana, a mixture of herbs and stuff that is 1/3 rum 1/3 red wine and 1/3 honey

a great dominican rum brand is "brugal". i don't think its sold here, but you can always go to the DR, pick up a bunch of bottles for <$8 a liter and come back here and enjoy!

That just sounds like a super-duper cheap low-rent imitation of Captain 😀

"Do you have any Captain Morgan?"
"Hell no! But we do have some Sailor Jerry!"
*Shrug* "Ok!"
I like it better than Captain.
But... I am an idiot and didn't read the full OP where he says Sailor Jerry is more expensive. 🙂

I thought Sailor Jerry was cheaper than Captain?!

I've never even heard of Sailor Jerry, so I can't comment on the price / taste or anything, I just thought it sounded funny next to Captain Morgan 😀
