I have an '03 Maxima SE and my only two complaints are that the front seats aren't very comfortable and the massive torque steer.

Skoorb, if you're ever in CT area I'd gladly give you a ride 🙂 I'm almost certain you'll change your opinion. Most of the negative things said about this car are said by car magazines. I'll never understand why they hate this car and love the 3 series so much. My buddy owns a loaded 325xi and in all honestly I prefer my car to his. The only good thing about his car is all wheel drive, but I'm thinking about picking up a used wrangler to get me around in the winter. Driving RWD during winter in new england isn't fun 🙁

Lets say your car wasn't an MBZ, would you still buy it? Would it still be worth the price if everything else were the same?

Absolutely not. I'm not denying that's a big reason I bought that car. I'm also not denying that it's a low end mercedes. But heck, I'm 22 years old (21 when I first bought it) and hopefully I'll be able to buy something nicer in the future. I'm pretty sure it'll be another German car. Maybe SLK320 or C330Ci 🙂

In short, I love this car, my friends love this car, my coworkers love this car, random strangers on the street seem to like it - therefore I'm happy 🙂 And after all said and done, isn't that the reason you a buy a car?

I buy a car for functionality, not to wave my ego around. If you truely want to make the compromise of driving a sh!t box instead of something you enjoy, so be it.

Oh, just so you know, I hate your car. 🙂

I got news for ya buddy, any person who spends more than 10k on a car buys it for their EGO. If all you care about is functionality then you should be driving a used Camry or Accord. If that's true, more power to you. RxL77 wants to spend over 30k on his care so I'm pretty sure he'll want to take good care of his ego.

Sure thing, bud.

That makes a ton of sense since people buy all sorts of econoboxes for 12-17k. Or how about trucks that cost upwards of 30k?

But for what its worth, as long as you enjoy your car, thats what counts. I just couldn't bring myself to buy a yuppie cruiser on the ideal that its better because its "different"

So by that same token the STi and Evo are that much better with AWD?? 😉

It really does depend on what kind of car you want... if you want a completely brutal performance car, one of the 2 rally inspired cars above will hit the spot. If you wanted an SUV or minivan?? Those are "cars" as well and many excellent ones are available in that price range. Or mebbe you wanted a big cruiser or a convertible or a sports coupe or a wagon?

Also, every car thread needs to include note if they're including used car... if that is the case and you're an addict modder like a few of us on AT, well, all bets are off. Supras, RX7s, Vettes, 911s, M3s.... you can even afford a few used exotics in that range.

So all that being said... my answer is the Evo 8. Runner-up 2002-2003 Audi S4 with $$ for mods.

You prefer your C(rap) class car to his? whoa... every MB tech and even reps...eek, company REPS didn't have very much to say about the car. I saw a C32? AMG in a parking lot yesterday and couldn't help but think... my gawd... what a waste of good money. I don't mind the exterior but the interior and ride and general feel of the car was kinda sucky. Ok... just flat out sucky if I was being honest. A fully-loaded Lexus IS300, BMW 325i, or even an Audi A4 (all class competitors mind you) felt better to me.

The car is exactly what Skoorb says it is, a crappy midsize car that happens to have MB slapped on it. Lots of people buy stuff because of labels... Acura, Lexus, Infiniti... labels... and since I've driven a C-class in direct comparison to those cars listed above... I say it drove like crap is the reason why car mags don't like it.

From a stop, absolutely. From a rolling start, not so much 🙂

Show me where they sell new $10K cars that have 4WD, tons of safety features and fit 7 and I'm all over it. Screw ego!

Take a serious look at the Chrysler 300M. Even if you are an import person, the LH platform from Chrysler is very solid and it is a good looking car with ample interior amenities. With 253hp to backup its looks, it doesn't leave much to be desired.

Why would you buy a new car? If you don't care about your ego a 3-4 year old car will do as well. Open newspaper, there're a bunch of 3-4 year old SUVs for that price range.

Or you could just buy a year old for $16,000 and pocket the other 17,000.

Their resale is ABYSMAL.

I have seen a lot of negative stuff on their reliability as well. I wouldnt touch a 300m with a '10 stick. Well, maybe with the stick I would...

Abysmal resale is great for the buyer if you want to keep a car. I didnt' say buy a new one, so a year old one for 16 is a great deal. That power train is fantasticaly durable and there really haven't been any rash of problems with the 99 and up LH platform.

Every car mentioned in here so far has been an import of one sort or another so I thought I'd mention a domestic competitor that often gets overlooked.

Give me an example of "crappy enterior" all you guys keep talking about. And what do you mean "drove like crap"? The suspension is excellent, plenty of safety features (6 airbags!!!, traction control, stability control), awesome leather interior, the dash is great (they have wood trim available, but I couldn't find one), not to mention FREE service and FREE roadside assistance for the duration I own the car. My other option at the time was a loaded V6 Mazda 6 or Audi A4, and C class beat them out easily, even though it cost a little more.

Uh, people buy new cars because they have longer & better factory warranties, more safety features, and the peace of mind of knowing that no one else has abused the car.

I highly doubt that people going out and buying a $20,000 Kia Sedona minivan are doing it to massage their ego.

Why wouldn't I? Because with a used car you don't know what you are getting. It's a crap shoot. Plus, the warranty is usually expired. There doesn't have to be ego involved just because you are buying new. If you can afford to buy new, why not? It's 3-4 years more longer the cars will last.

Edit: Bigsmooth beat me to it 🙂

Well, new cars depreciate the second you take it off the lot. Within first 2 years the car loses almost 25% of it's value. So you'd just buy a certified preowned 🙂

If you check a car out, buying used is not that big of a deal. A new car is really only for people who don't feel like 'wasting time' checking out cars and who don't care about the money. Used cars are where the deals are at, and you'd think a forum with such a strong following of the "hot deals" area could appreciate that.

I do appreciate it. I almost always recommend buying used over new and I buy used myself. But there ARE valid reasons for buying new. The suggestion that "ego" is the only possible reason anyone spends more than $10,000 on a new car is what I took issue with.

if your looking for a

Coupe
1. BMW 325Ci i got one and it was a little more than $34000 out the door
2. Infiniti G35 Coupe

Sedan
1. BMW 325i its actually cheaper than the Ci by a couple of thousand
2. Acura TL
3. Lexus IS300
4. Audi A4

would not get a Chrysler C-class
dont like the G35 sedans back it still looks wierd 2 me

i would go test drive every car possible than make your decision
i test drove all of those mention above and the Bimmer drove the best!!

I think the Maxima, Acura and certainly the G35 beat those cars in interior design & luxury.

I would NEVER buy a Chrysler. They are junk, just like GM cars are junk. They aren't built to last, they are built to fall apart.

Yes, more information is needed about your needs/wants. Do you need 4 doors? Would a coupe serve your needs? Do you want a car that handles well or is luxury more important to you? Do you want to project an image by the car you drive? What is that image?

EGO or not, its worthless buying a 'prestigous' brand even though the product is underpowered

C class and the initial 3 series are totally not worth it when u can get higher end lexus, infinity and acura's for about the same and no i dont care for the name or some random ppl coming up to me and saying it loos cute, i want more bang for buck thank you

Yeah some people just have extra money to spend, regardless of ego size. Also if you are really car-o-phobic a new car with a bunch of warranty isn't a bad idea.

I would agree with you to a certain extent but I have to say, the Mercedes and BMW do hold their value quite well. Look at a used 3 series, they aren't much less than a new one on a dealer lot. My wife has a 1994 325i with 120k miles on it and those are selling for almost 10 grand! The freakin car is 10 years old!!!
