Forgot to mention when I worked at Best Buy ('92-'99) a guy bought a Sony video camcorder and paid about $999 IIRC. He returned a few hours later and told customers service that when he opened box that bricks were inside. You could hear him yelling and being upset. Hard to tell if he was scamming/telling the truth since item was shrink wrapped when sold. Not sure how it was resolved since I was doing my Shipping/receiving job. And to think that BB actually accepted returns without checking/opening the box if it was still shrink wrapped. How hard is it not to have a shrink wrapping machine outside the retail store, they were and still are widely available if you wanted one that time. :\

Back in the CRT days my parents bought a 20" TV at Sears. When we got home and opened the box all that was in it was a cinder block and a bunch of balled up newspapers.

To your point I think the logic for not checking shrink wrapped products was that they could still be sold as new, where as if they opened them they would have to be sold as open box.

This has been going on for years.

Over the years, I've seen news casts that talked about stores barring individuals from patronizing their stores due to serial returns. It was mostly about women returning clothes(renting them) and stores like Macy's telling them that their business is no longer wanted.

I bought a shrink wrapped DVD of Rounders from Best Buy. Inside was the transparent disc that is on top of a stack of blank discs. So I go back to the store, tell them what happened, and the csr precedes to put the disc in a player to verify it doesnt play. The people handling returns aren't the smartest bunch.

Sometimes legitimate retail DVDs look a lot like fakes, so I don't blame them for checking it.

So I think we've narrowed it down to theft and fraud. For the record I "barrow" $50 worth of products from Walmart every 3 months. Razors. deodorant, hair gel, misc products, ect. I really like the fabric department. My wife "barrows" the same amount. We can return them for a $100 worth of store credit. Then we can buy what we really want. It rocks. Right?

I don't get why Bestbuy is being such a bitch about their return policies. I mean really...who would abuse it?

Do you mean borrow? And by borrow do you mean stealing items and returning them for money?!!!

Returning something that you broke by mistake, got bored of or newer model came released, I have even seen people return printers after printing their vacation pictures, these are just a few examples. I am sure if you are reasonable honorable guy, you will never have a problem with genuine returns even with their new system
Yep -- and even I admit guilt on this one. A few occasions I have scratched my XBOX 360 games. I just get the scratch fixed at a CD repair place for a few bucks then exchange the game at Wal-Mart.

Yeah you probably shouldn't be doing that.

For whatever it's worth, Best Buy has treated me VERY well in the past.

Bought 32" Westinghouse TV 6 years ago ($678). At the time it only had one HDMI. I bought 4 year extended warranty for it.

3.5 years into the ownership that HDMI plug wouldn't work and they were not able to fix it due to lack of part availability etc. Asked me to bring it to the store.

Now keep in mind 32" TVs 2 years ago (when I returned it) were already at $250-300 mark. So I thought they would replace it with an Insignia or some other crappy 32" in that price range.

NOPE, they gave me ENTIRE amount back, which put me in the 40"-47" range at the time.

So I picked out a nice new 40" Samsung TV WITH another 4 year warranty for under $700 bucks.

Thank you very much Best buy

You're right. There's a problem when the item is supposedly still "shrink wrapped" and in the same condition it was when it left the store. When I worked there, I mentioned about the possibility of this happening. I was given the this blank stare/stupid look by management/customer service.
Another incident was a "video card" not the same as pictured/not even the same brand which I found doing my devo returns after the tech (before Geek Squad) accepted them. When software/games were returned the store where I worked, we checked its condition and I ended up using the shrink wrap machine (found in the merchandizing cage) and sometimes returned to the sales floor marked down. I always had a pile of this every end of the month ready for shipping back to the devo center. The Service Center had piles and piles of items which had to be checked and tagged what was wrong with item before it could be RTV for credit. If item was still under manufacturers warranty/PSP it was "fixed" at Service Center, turnaround was about 2 weeks. Definitely a money pit in some cases. I hated the week Super Bowl when for sure people returned big screen projection TVs without bothering to put them back inside the original packaging/box. Store always took it as a loss just for "customer service" sake. Hoping those big spenders will return to make more big ticket purchases in the future. Can't believe I worked there for 7 years with a lot of stupid decisions made by management/corporate. Oh, the horror stories I still remember after all these years. :(:\

Their warranty is not that bad at all. They'll try to repair it but if they cant they will give you credit for another one.

What's the scam?

1) Buy an item, use it for 1 day less than the return time frame and then return it for a full refund. Repeat. Professional renters.

2) Buy an item, swap it for something much less valuable but looks the same and then return it for a full refund.

3) Steal from a store and return the same item with no receipt for a full refund.

We had an issue when i used at work best buy. A group of people would buy a high priced video card and then swap the card with a old pos PCI video card and return it the next day. Customer service had no idea, they just checked the box to make sure a card was in there.

Heh, that one was pretty common. I think myself and a friend did that back when we were 16.

Actually, I'm in the same boat. I've always had good service from them and they've treated me fairly. I'm also someone that's always polite, never yells, and follows the rules. Not sure if there's a correlation.

It was good in the days when the society ran on honor basis, there are to many douche bags around these days for it to work.

Give people an inch and they take 10 miles...

It only takes a few bad eggs to make the entire assembly smell rotten.

I am surprised these companies havent been doing this for years. This is just another form of loss prevention. Lots of scammers out there. I dont have a problem with this.

This was the clear plastic disc that sits on top of blanks. Although I could understand the confusion with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo dvd.

Ah, right, that is what you meant by transparent. Silly to even bothering checking that, I agree.
