Best Alternative to Gmail?

Gmail decided to be very nice and unbeknownst to me, disabled my account. So far, the 24 hours is up for them to "restore" my account and they haven't responded to my e-mails yet. I have no idea why, and since some e-mails that were going to be sent to me had information such as my online orders and info needed to complete labs. Thus, I need a new alternative because this is the only e-mail service that has banned me (and it was my primary service too...).

What is the best?
Hotmail?
Yahoo?
my ISP?

From what little I've used it, I actually like their interface a lot.

I started using FastMail in the pre-Gmail days. I'm still giving them $40/year for a variety of reasons, one of them being fear of the customer service-less Google smackdown. I mostly use it for IMAP though, their web interface is so-so.

Some people who use Gmail as their primary service are starting to keep alternate accounts (Gmail or otherwise), and have email forwarded to them as well. That way you at least avoid the total communications blackout.

I use FastMail as well. I initially did it because they support IMAP. Now I use them because I like their web interface *MUCH* more than any other I've seen, anywhere.

Best choice I ever made.

I do use Yahoo as a redundancy, though. I never really liked Gmail all that much.

you know, that's something I've always been afraid of with google. the stories of random bans, and nearly 0 support from google on why, or what you can do. But I'm quite fond of their interface. How much say to they have if you use their google apps for your own domain?

And if you're looking for a good paid service, fastmail.fm is pretty nice. their new interface looks good, and I'm thinking of switching back to them as my primary (they are my backup now). But I have a lot tied to google, and don't want to move my email over.. it's all organized and whatnot. Well, it's all mostly moved over, just unorganized.

This is why I have my own domain that I just forward to gmail. Sure they can ban me, but I have my local downloaded messages and I can just forward that addy to another service (or setup my own).

stay away from Hotmail at all costs. They are better than Yahoo with spam filtering, but g'damn their new interface breaks constantly if you're not using IE.

This. Choose well though - I have my new work email at the place where I registered the domain and I got it cheap as part of a deal. Thier web interface is shockingly bad. You get so used to the excellence of the Gmail interface you really want something comparable.

I have my own host and the email interfaces suck. Gmail & ajax ftw.

I really REALLY wish you would have put a warning around this one. I'm in my office and I just saw the top part of some of those pics before closing the tab !!

For the OP,

If you did something to annoy a free mail provider, and they don't respond to you, then there's a good chance that any other free provider would do the same.

So, I will advise you NOT to use yahoo or any paid service.

Your safest bet would be a paid service. If you like the service from your ISP so far, then go with their offering, otherwise try someone else.

More than 2 recommend Fastmail. I've not used it, but I say to check them out.

I'll see about the paid services. The thing is, Gmail has been going nuts disabling accounts for no reason. There's a huge Digg on it too dating back to 2007 and up until now there are hundreds (if not thousands) of reports about people getting their accounts wrongly disabled.
