I hope not. But on the other hand, should a far tougher prison give up a spot that could go to a violent career criminal for him? I'm not sure how it works, but either case I hope it's hell for him.
 
while I agree that he's a piece of shit that deserves to rot, it says something about our justice system when someone guilty of defrauding investors gets 150 years and people convicted of rape, armed robbery, homicide, etc. get less than 10 years.

From one article I read, his crime prevents him from being placed in a minimum security FCF. He'll most likely be placed in a medium-security facility.

actually they said in cases of life in jail like this he will go to the avarage Med security. The odds on him going to a no security or low security like people think are very very low.

while what he did is disgusting and he deserves a bullet. they won't put him in high or max security either (though wish they would)
 
is there a provision whereby wealthy criminals have to pay for their cost of care in prison? this guy just got 3 squares, health and dental for ripping people off.

See how many years the rapist would get if the had even 3 or 4 rapes as compared to thousands of victims from this guy.

 
Honestly, he can never repay his debt to society. The only "up" side to all of this is that mostly he stole from the upper-class, the people that could afford to lose money best. Yes, there are examples of middle- and lower-middle-class people that gave him most or all of their savings, but still, the vast majority of the money that he stole was from stratospheric investors.

I highly disagree with the angry "kill the fucker" responses. The fact is, his crime is on the same level with a bank robbery or a home burglar - it's theft. The fact is, he was in the right place, with the right skills and the right pedigree to achieve his crime on a far greater scale. If your average white-collar thief or even your run-of-the-mill street thief were in the same position, they would have escalated their crimes to Madoff's level as well if they thought they could give away with it. The common denominator is the selfish projection of greed beyond respect for society's laws. We don't go around executing everybody that steals now, do we?

His crime was NOT on the same level as a bank robbery or home burglar. It went well beyond simple theft. You're completely ignoring the effects his fraud had on others - people had invested their life savings & all their retirement money. His fraud was a MAJOR precipitating factor in several suicides. Ever hear of people committing suicide because their bank was robbed?

I'd like to think that murdering and/or raping one person deserves a harsher, if not equal, punishment as defrauding thousands.

That is the problem with financial crimes that I alluded to above. The compounding of different counts (1000+ counts of fraud) results in a ridiculous sentence compared to what most would consider far more severe crimes.

I'm not arguing that Madoff should get a slap on the wrist, but a 150 year sentence is insulting when a child rapist is free after a year in jail.

Yes. This mf needs to suffer (and those around him, also). He's in the same league as ken lay. It looks like there are more involved in this scam and investigations should continue.
