<< Berkeley is synonomous with Boulder >>

no it's not. They're very similar places, but synonymous is the wrong word.

Berkeley has a repuatation for being extremely left-wing, politically correct, and often outrageously overboard with the student protests etc. My favorite Berkeley story was the student who asserted his right to attend classes clothesless. He did it too, I think for several months until they decided that that was too much even for them. No personal experience but from what I read within the UC system, it's earned its reputation. On the other hand, it also has a well-earned reputation for being a great science university. The humanities department might range a little on the very unconventional (read weird) side though.

<< synonymous \Syn*on"y*mous\, a. [Gr. ?; sy`n with, together + ?, ?, name. See Syn-, and Name.] Having the character of a synonym; expressing the same thing; conveying the same, or approximately the same, idea. -- >>

I think it's exactly the right word, except for my spelling.

there are actually a lot of conservatives on campus, too, they're not all hippies. there's around 30,000 students 🙂

<< I'm a junior at Berkeley. It's a little weird at times, but it keeps things interesting. >>

AGREE....I love it there!!! About the weird situations at time, if you stay in your own realm (AT), you're fine. hehehe..j/k.

Hey..our Basketball team is doing really good!

AND.......we split our two games with stanFURD. So we've only lost once in the pac10. Pretty good..huh?

Look at this graphic for an idea of where left and right fall in the United States political spectrum. You can also take a quiz to see where your beliefs lie. That test isn't the best out there, but it'll do. I landed dead center of the map. w00t! 🙂

Back to the topic at hand, our basketball team IS doing very well.

There are a lot of homeless people, panhandlers, and hippies in Berkeley. The predominant political view is very far to the left, near radicalism.

However, like anywhere in the country, there are moderates and conservatives here. I'm one of the moderates. We are the small minority, though.

IMHO, the school itself is no longer politically active, or very left leaning. The general sentiment on campus after 9-11 was solidarity/patriotism and support of military retaliation. Which is a far cry from the 60s.
