It's super easy to condemn Vietnam era draft dodgers when being subject to it never was a part of your life. I condemn the hypocrisy exhibited today, not the actions taken at the time to avoid being part of an utterly immoral war.

Those of us who lived through it, one way or another, have largely come to terms with each other about it.

I agree. After watching the Ken Burns documentary I don’t know how anyone could blame someone for dodging the draft. Now if they dodged the draft yet advocated for the war that’s a different story.

I see that you have a finely tuned moral compass that demands justice for immoral behavior. What punishment should Fox News suffer for publishing demonstrable lies (read Jasks posts) as factual news regarding this case? From my perspective, what Fox News did was far worse and they have paid no price for it. Their viewers are completely unaware of the true facts regarding the case. I don't think a country could do much worse than have its news organizations materially and intentionally misrepresent physical reality without consequence. So...... how should Fox News be punished?

No there is a difference here. Trump didn't dodge the draft because of moral objections. He did it because he was a pussy.

For like two weeks that Ken Burns Vietnam documentary was free on PBS. I watched the whole thing 3 times over. I think it was his best work yet, even better than his WWII and Civil War documentaries.

Wish it was still free, 10/10 would watch again.

It doesn't really matter anymore to those of us who came of age at the time. Those of us who escaped the draft got lucky, one way or another. Those who didn't, not so much. Those who got shot up & fucked up, even less. Those who died, not at all.

That's the thing. There have been and continue to be so many hawkish and war-mongering people in our political system, think-tanks, and defense contractors that were 'lucky' enough to have a doctor who would exempt them from service for bone spurs, anal fissures, whatever.

Not always medical either. Cheney was pro war but maxed out his student deferments, so he knocked up the wife to claim expectant father. Dubya was somehow selected to be a pilot in order to defend Texan borders from the NVA.

I see you have no idea of the importance of being able to depend on the guy next to you in a foxhole. You need to know he isn't going to be a deserter. He did it to himself when he deserted his post and fellow servicemen. He even admitted it by pleading guilty to desertion and misbehavior before the enemy.
