BenQ Black 16X IDE DVD Burner

Love my benq 1655. Reads and writes everything with near perfect scores. Even burns 4x media at 16x with cdspeed quality scores >95%. So much better than my nec 2500 and liteon 811. Specially that poc 811.
Give benq a try.

Ditto that. I luv my Benq 1655, heck my might even sell my NEC 4551.

Sweet deal OP...I might jump on this, for I have been on the fence to replace my 4x burner. Too bad the beige drive doesn't get free shipping!

how does the 1650 differ from the 1655 ?

The 1655 supports lightscribe and for the moment is a superior burner in quality. That may change with further firmware upgrades.

Is BenQ 1655 a "better" burner now than NEC/Pioneer models?

Are there any other brands that compete with NEC/Pioneer or are these three the top brands now?

Ditto here. My NEC-3520A is over a year old and already having some issue reading disc. So I need a better replacement. Would that be it?

A good place to read more is

Most people would find themselves satisfied with the Pioneer 111 or the Nec 3550 or the Liteon 160P6S or the LG4167. Among the enthusiasts who have owned all, or most, of the above models, the Benq 1655 usually stands out as the best overall drive.

I own a NEC-3520A, a Benq 1640, and a Benq 1655. Both Benqs consistently give higher quality burns at faster speeds. I rarely use the NEC now.

Vaguely recall reading somewhere (another post?; buyer review?; or just way offbase?) that although this is an OEM unit, someone who got one from Newegg got a copy of Nero with it. Doesn't say anything about including Nero on the Newegg site, can anyone confirm either way?

If not, what is it gonna cost me for software to 'back up' DVD movies?

Been holding out for a deal on a beige 1650 myself. Finally pulled the trigger on one today for $38.88 shipped. Newegg now has it listed for $33.99 plus $4.89 for three day shipping. Only $2.89 more to match my rig still feels like a good deal.

Thanks OP.

Here is a direct link to the beige drive for anyone interested. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827101011

DVD Shrink is FREE, and it works really well.

If you click on the 'Read all reviews' link on the item page, you will see it mentioned an OEM Nero package comes with the drive. Dosen't say what version though. Hope that helps.

I have the benq 1655 ($50) and the nec 3550 ($40). The Nec does well specially compared to my older lite-on811 (pure junk) but the benq is amazing. I used to think I had a media problem... or a fragmentation problem, or an interupt problem or a combination. I figured that because all 4 of the burners I had access to couldn't all be crap, but they were. My only problem was I didn't have a benq. I can burn nearly any media at any speed. I even burn old 2.4x phillips at 16x no problem.

I'd be a shill if I was getting paid. it slices, it dices ......

And my benq 1655 came with nero from newegg. And I needed it because my slightly older nero couldn't recognize the drive. It also added lightscribe but I haven't used that feature yet.

When did BenQ become a good brand? I know they used to be looked at as an inferior drive to the Lite-ons, but this thread implies differently.

I remember that in cd burner days. I think the two flipped positions when dvd burners came out. BTW the the benq seems to burn cds perfectly also. What burner doesnt anymore?
