"Carson said he was honored to accept the opportunity to serve in Trump's administration. "I feel that I can make a significant contribution particularly by strengthening communities that are most in need," he said.

Carson was one of Trump's many rivals for the Republican nomination for president, which was the retired African-American doctor's first foray into politics. Carson surged briefly in the polls last fall, which prodded Trump to question Carson's religion (he's a Seventh-day Adventist).

Trump also brought up Carson's childhood temperament and anger, issues Carson had written about in his autobiography. Trump said Carson's temperament was an incurable sickness that he compared to "child molesting".

Carson in no way is qualified to run the agency other than he supported Trump.

Not sure what other comment to make other than it should be an confirmation hearing..

He does not have experience managing a bloated federal agency bureaucracy. This is true. However, as a person who grew up in the inner city to a young single mother and became a well educated neurosurgeon, I am sure he has a relevant perspective.

So his qualification is 'lived in a city.' I wonder if there are any other people who lived in cities and went on to be successful who have literally a single day of experience in running a large agency, urban planning, etc.

Nah, I'm sure not.

You appoint unqualified space cadets like this to ambassadorships in unimportant, preferably out of the way, places where they can't seriously fuck up anything. You don't appoint them to cabinet posts.

Politics 101.

Rotation programs, fish out of water development opportunities and diversity are all the rage right now for the corporate C suite. Are you telling me it is all just another facade to justify chronyism? Are you telling me that to be successful in a role you need demonstrated and relevant experience? I am going to go share this revelation with HR immediately.

Similarly, the other rage right now is disruption. Take a stagnant, wasteful or bureaucratic organization and give it a leadership jolt.

Chris Christie as HUD secretary raises an eyebrow. Carson, I am curious

No I'm sure you're right and this is just an incredible coincidence that he nominated a former primary opponent turned early supporter to this position despite his total lack of relevant experience or qualifications and despite the fact that this very nominee described himself as unqualified for a cabinet post, haha. Are you joking?

As for demonstrated ability and relevant experience there's no need to tell HR that those are important as they are well aware already.

So inserting an incompetent crony is your idea of disruption? Hokay. By that logic he could have nominated you or me then and he would have been 'disrupting' just as much. Does that sound like a good argument?

I'm just referencing the great Dr. Ben Carson himself

""Dr. Carson feels he has no government experience, he's never run a federal agency. The last thing he would want to do was take a position that could cripple the presidency.""

I look forward to a return to the glory of a spoils-system administration molded in the likes of the great King Andrew the First.

That's actually a rather fitting observation; America is turning into the stereotypical medieval government, of unqualified buffoons being in positions of power led by an idiotic malcontent.

Well, he's no Van Jones that's for certain. Speaking of Van Jones, when will we get word of Trump's "czar" appointments?

That's not what he said. He said he's a very successful person that grew up in 'a city'. How many black doctor former presidential candidates are there?
Being a so-called primary candidate != qualified. As witnessed in this last election, nearly any idiot can run for president.

Rewarding loyalists is part of the cabinet stuffing game. I never expected Trump to make inspired choices. For all his noise about draining the swamp, his choices are about what I have come to expect out of Republicans.

As for appointing you or me, depends on our respective credentials. As I said, Chris Christie would raise an eyebrow. Dr Carson is a curious choice, not an unreasonable one

Uh, you're doing a heck of a job ... Carson?

Wow. Given Carson's recent quote about not being ready for a cabinet slot, this is a head scratcher. Add it to the list.

BRB, gonna buy stock in Brawndo.

Perhaps Trump thinks that the word "urban" in "Department of Housing and Urban Development" is just a euphemism. Like how it is used in phrases like "urban music." Hey, he's black, (public) housing, urban development. The blacks live in ghettoes. This makes sense through the Trump filter.
