Ben Carson says slaves were immigrants

At least he's not cutting up living children anymore. Think of the lives Trump saved by nominating him to such a position? Probably his best pick, after Conway.

Wow, so Trump does the stereotypical, "let get the black guy to run HUD. Those people ain't t touchin' another part of the cabinet." Ben steps up and plays his role of the self loathing negro.

Looks to be tongue-in-cheek. Don't need to hype up or sensationalize this nonsense when there's so much legit criticism available.

Sensationalize? He's a moron and in an important position. Sounding like an idiot for the sake of humor? He opened himself up to be criticized. But no, the guys sense of humor is non-existent. No amount of downplaying this changes the fact the guy is ridiculous.

Admit it, this topic has all the hallmarks of making !@#$ up on an opponent. It might as well be one of Trump's 3am tweets.
Carson did not intend to diminish slavery and you know it. That whole context is your projection onto him.
Yes, he has a history of saying odd things, of standing by them too. This isn't one of them.

I don't believe I said one way or another that his deliberate intention was to diminish slavery. But he is in an important position, it was an idiotic thing to say.

Though I am a big proponent of human equals fallibility, I also believe people in leadership positions holding themselves to a high standard. If only because if they don't the people will.

That is what you are witnessing and it will continue even to the absurd. Neither party has the market cornered on unreasonable/reasonable expectations of the other party.

So yes, this is one of them in that he absolutely has to consider the opinion and reactions of those who adamantly oppose him, when he speaks. They'll be relentless. They'll dissect, split hairs and use a fine tooth comb. He was wrong to say it regardless of his intention. It wasn't innocent, it was ignorant.

*sigh* Always trying to make a thing out of something...
If a slave came from somewhere else, are they not an immigrant?

Lol, absolutely not. A slave is enslaved against their will. The slaves brought to America did not want to come to America. An immigrant is intentionally making the chose to make another place their home for a multitude of reasons. You are being obtuse by making such a simplistic comment.

I'll say it again. No, a slave is not an immigrant. I return your sigh and up you a shake of my head.

Oh I'm not outraged even in the slightest. That doesn't mean it shouldn't be seen for what it was. I'm certain no one is surprised he said something stupid but there's no need to excuse it either. The man is a fool.

Here's the context:

Since these were minutes from a meeting/discussion, the 'context' is what he was responding to when he said that.

Ya know, finding out why he would make such a response?

im·mi·grant
ˈiməɡrənt/
noun
noun: immigrant; plural noun: immigrants
a person who comes to live permanently in a foreign country.

There is no specification as to whether or not that was against one's will. Still an immigrant.

compuwiz1, immigrate is a verb. An immigrant is one who has immigrated. If they were abducted, then clearly they did not immigrate. If someone is abducted and taken to another country, they're not called an immigrant-abductee or anything like that. Just like no-one (except maybe a closet slaver) calls a slave an employee, or a murder as an "extroverted suicide", or a soldier who dies on a foreign tour of duty as an immigrant.

At some point they became citizens and later told their offspring where they immigrated from. Many people went on to become productive and valued citizens of the USA. They are immigrants.

Didn't Obama once say, "we are all immigrants, unless you're native american" ?

I'm pretty sure blacks aren't native american.

Weird how it's only a problem when conservatives say these things.

Son, around these parts, we call that liberal hypocrisy. The liberal nephew was home for the weekend from college. Yet, he's on the phone with his friend talking about n@ggers and their IQs, how they're either in the NBA, or trying get something. At the dinner table he's talking about inequality, diversity and hate. lol

LoL, just when you think a brain surgeon (not a nit wit) with direct ties to urban housing may be a good pick....oooh, you almost had me.

😀

Ok, you're simply ignorant of what a verb is.

I'd say they were former slaves who were automatically granted citizenship for lack of any reasonable alternative.

No, apparently he referred to America as "a nation of immigrants". I'd say the wording he used was technically incorrect, though funnily enough everyone knew what he meant, ie. referring to the heritage of almost all modern-day Americans, and the rest of what he said makes sense with that. Ben Carson on the other hand just piled one idiotic and incorrect statement on top of another.

The white nationalists who came up with the whitewashing intended to diminish slavery. Carson is just parroting the party line. Notice the other dummy doing the same in this thread, apparently obliged to defend the ideology til the end.

Nope, Obama literally stated "we're all immigrants."
