Belichick explains Super walk off
Posted: Wednesday February 06, 2008 07:10AM ET

Bill Belichick has come under considerable fire for marching out onto the field, and shaking Tom Coughlin's hand while there still was one second left on the clock. He already was long gone and headed to the locker room when Giants quarterback Eli Manning took the final snap and kneeled down to end the game. "Basically, on the last play I wasn't really sure of the time," Belichick said. "Everybody started onto the field and then I got over there and I wanted to congratulate Tom. I've been in that situation before after the game. I wanted to get over there and congratulate him and congratulate him on the championship. They deserved it. There really wasn't much left at that point."

Right...the ref stopped him midfield and told him there was time left on the clock. He ignored it because his ego would not allow him to walk back to the sidelines.

well to be fair people were running on the field. he did run out and shake Coghlins hand then ran off.

1 second left with them having 4 downs yeah there really was not a point ot play it.

i just think this is people trying to blow up something that is not there.

the fact reminds that with even 1 second left the teams have to go out onto the field and let the clock officially run out. what would happen if his whole team abandoned ship with him? the game wasn't over, and he high tailed it. it wasn't the right move. it sets a poor example for the kids watching the game, too. it really looked like he was a sore loser.

It looked more like he was devastated and dissapointed than a sore loser. A sore loser wouldn't have given Coughlin his props on the field.

The next thread is going to be complaining that Belichick likes hoodies instead of jackets.

Jesus Christ, grow up.

he's not that stupid. :p

if he walked out without shaking Coughlin's hand he would be labeled a total jerk forevermore.

Instead of being a labled a jerk by "people" like you because he walked off the field with one second left after the field had be rushed by fans and security? There's a lot he can be justly critisized for, this isn't one of them.

Yeah, sorry, but you and all the rest are just grasping at straws. He already will be labeled as a jerk for ever more, so it doesn't really matter what he does. I don't like the man much at all, but there was nothing wrong with what he did. Set an example? Yeah, because walking off the field after you've basically had the wind knocked out of you is so much worse than cheating, or dressing like a hobo, or being an a-hole. Please, people need to stop with this "set an example, be a role model" crap.

I still think it would have been funny if the Giants made the snap before the Pats D could get back on the field and waltzed right in for a touchdown.

Would be a perfect "suck it" to Belichick crying because a player was inches from being off the field when the ball was snapped.

Actually there were but they were called back to finish the game. It's no big deal except with "people" like you.

go ahead and give him a free pass, but kids across America watched the Super Bowl and asked their parents why Belichick left the field before the game was over.
i guess when the going gets tough they should do like Belichick did and just leave rather than finish it out.

I don't really see much in it. I think most people try to blame him for starting everyone coming out on the field but he was probably just going along with everyone else, including Coughlin.

Anyway everyone is so happy the Pats lost but forget we have to worry about them next year still :p

While I can admit that I wouldn't want to be out there any longer, running away with your tail between your legs and leaving your team behind is stupid. Of all people, the head coach should be the last one to head to the locker room. Ever. I don't believe that in the 30-45 second walk from midfield to the corridor to the locker rooms he didn't get told the last second needed to be played.

If anyone here watched the clock, you saw it hit zero then it was reset to allow for one more play to go off for the Giants.
