My immune system works fine. Theres nothing wrong with taking a tynenol or something when sick. They don't try to cure anythinhg, just relive the symptoms.

Vaccines help the immune system make antibodies, so theres noting really wrong with them

Our immune system kicks the crap out of 99.9% of Virus's and bacteria out there, its that .01% where our immune system falters. Nothing can really cure virus', drugs only help the immune system to fight, such as causing problems with Viral replication, which lets the IS catch up with killing the damn things.

Drugs only supplant the immune system, not replace it.

No one includes things like Tylenol in these discussions...one talks antibiotics. The virus is one of the most resilient creatures ever. They adapt fast and becoming quickly stronger.

If you read the news you will find out about MRSA/VRSA and other types of super flus caused by all these antibiotics and flu shots.

We are promoting the better viruses to survive and become what's common.

misinformation here

I don't see any misinformation. Some people have better genes and immune systems and just don't get sick from something like the cold. I've met many people who have never had a cold or even the flu, among other illnesses.

Humans, because of morality and other nonsense, think we need to treat everyone, instead of letting natural selection run its course. Humanity would be far better if we just let go of the moral conflicts that would arise from letting someone die from an infectious disease, and just let nature run its course. Imagine how many fewer infections humanity in general would have to fight if everyone had strong immune systems simply because it was in our gene pool, since those with weaker immune systems would die without medication for every little thing.
Modern medicine is great, but in effect is hurting mankind's potential for natural adaptation, and could even be stopping potential evolution. Who says our current bodies are the best nature can offer? But due to how diluted man's gene pool, we can't even properly adapt.
Look at alligators (or is it crocodiles?) who have such a strong immune system, that they can live in the a very bad environment in terms of health conditions, all without ever falling victim to an infection from an open wound.
If we left a nasty wound open, most humans would die without medication. That's why they are looking to protein's in the blood of those creatures to see if they can apply it to modern medicine.

+

Natural selection was never a cure for the common cold-- there never was a cure. No one is immune to cold viruses, although some may be less prone to getting infected and recover more quickly than others.

You've made an argument basically against modern medicine. For an extreme fan of "Fight Club" etc., I guess this may make sense. For almost all of the modern thinking world, it's ridiculous and stupid.

By the way, there's an extreme shortage of medicine in Third World countries. No super race of immune supermen has yet emerged. This is even with extreme overpopulation. Food for thought-- or not, I guess. {shrug}

By the way, natural selection only works if people are prevented from breeding in statistically significant numbers.

I was joking in part, but I think your little non-scientific brain should study on population, overcrowding and lack of nutrition with simple rats as a way to envision why those third world countries aren't doing well.

In modern times, plagues have been the resource reset.

I am hoping you are still in high school.

if a couple million years of evolution wasn't enough to rid humanity of the common cold why the fuck do you think it will help now?

the irony in you hoping someone is in high school is overwhelming

it's a complex topic. One I was not looking to get into with those that obviously don't understand.

You do realize that we have been treating and protecting ourselves from 'germs' a long time right? We try to save the guy that gets sick rather than just let him perish.

The only way humanity will gain immunity from the common cold is if the common cold had side effects that prevented people from procreating (ie death).

The reason why humans aren't immune to the common cold is precisely because it doesn't kill us. The common cold will kill people or lead to greater complications those with compromised immune systems and etc - okay, fine, this is natural selection at work. But the vast majority of humans don't get receive any lasting side effects from the cold virus other than a couple days of aches, runny noses and other light symptoms. That's why we continue to suffer with it and live, because it will not affect the gene pool in any significant manner. And since it does not, humans have no reason to evolve immunity against it.

how is that a step against evolution?

we evolve based on what helps us procreate and keeps our species going, therefore 'compassion' and saving a fellow human's life would be a step towards this goal as it allows more people to procreate thus expanding our chances of survival... sound more useful than just getting rid of a minor nuisance like the cold.

anyways last time i checked our population is growing at tremendous rates and threatens the world with overpopulation. from an evolutionary standpoint, if thats not success i don't know what is

You didn't answer really...I am taking you aren't really in grad school or doing one of those joke grad degrees.

I doubt your IQ is 168 (which scale anyway)...I pegged close to genius level but not quite and was in gifted classes throughout school.

Doubt away, "close to genius level". You apparently think MRSA is a virus as well. LOL

Is it okay if I just append a single "[sic]" to cover that whole post of yours?

You are pwned. Others have noted the absurdity of you hoping someone else is still in high school.

where did I say what MRSA was?

I really like the way you think pwning someone works.

Face it, you are not in any real grad program, and your IQ would only be 168 if you had 6" of Einstein up your ass while blowing Hawkins.

While Alkemyst is an idiot and clearly not even close to "genius" level, no one here is impressed by an argument where you throw your IQ around.

But I'm not, really. alkemyst accused me of having a "little non-scientific brain", which was the only reason I mentioned my IQ at all. JD50, who's generally about on alkemyst's level, has taken a dislike to me in other threads and decided to chime in. That's all that really happened here.

None of this would've happened if alkemyst had just thought through his posts a little more, to where he actually had an opinion that was worth a damn... He had plenty of chances to gracefully admit he was wrong, but he kept digging himself in deeper.

I have already posted up my acceptance to Pharmacy school prior to even getting my AA degree, I am sure I can dig up my IQ test.

I think it's funny with such a large IQ and if he does have a science background, Punchkin thinks PWNing someone...is just replying PWNED to a thread with nothing to back it up.

I am betting he is on a University of Phoenix MBA at home deal for 'Grad School'.

It's nothing personal to Punchkin but obviously like many that what his replies have come. They come into a thread figuring they are just going to play devil's advocate or crap on it and in the 'excitement' they fail to read what was originally said and just reply to what they think would have been posted or in response to another replying person that didn't read.

I have always offered to reply to where I was WRONG...the problem is no one has ever shown this really...
